Chapter
Forty
Day Two
“Stop bein’ a little bitch and go talk to her,” Rot growls.
I can’t.
Not after last night.
Not after what I did.
Fuck.
My cheeks singe with another infuriating wave of embarrassment as I focus on my computer and continue to ignore Rot. He won’t leave, and I don’t have shit to say.
Coffin throws open my office door and enters without knocking. “I know why he’s holed up in here.”
“Why?” Rot asks.
Heaving my office chair backward as I stand, it crashes against the bookshelf, and I stalk to the bastard before he can open his mouth.
“He did what you did,” Coffin says as I slam my fist into his too-chiseled jaw, and the fucker stumbles backward, laughing his sadistic ass off .
“What did I do?” Rot sits on the edge of my desk, not the least concerned as I attack Coffin again, swinging and missing as he dodges my next strike.
“Calm down, fucker. Or you’ll hurt yourself.” He snorts.
Calm down?
Calm down?!
I came in my pants like a prepubescent teen when Sola touched me.
Reaching into my boot, I pull out my knife and rip it across my forearm. Blood rushes to the surface.
I don’t want to live like this.
“Oh. You big, fuckin’ baby. Stop it.” Coffin tears the knife from my hand before I do it again as Rot hops down to find the first aid kit I store in the bottom drawer of my desk.
Sighing, he pulls out whatever he needs to bandage me up as I let the blood drip down my arm and hand onto the floor.
Pissed off at… everything… I turn away from them.
It’s been forever since I’ve cut.
It doesn’t happen often, but it feels good.
The spike of adrenaline. The dull pain.
I breathe out as Coffin shoves me in Rot’s direction. “Will you stop hurting yourself? Fuck,” my dark-haired brother scolds, as he wipes down the mess and applies pressure to the long cut before wrapping my forearm in gauze.
Coffin clasps me on the shoulder and squeezes. “That’s nothin’ to be embarrassed about.”
I shrug him off .
The hell it ain’t.
“You came in your pants, didn’t you?” Rot guesses, and I ignore him.
“Sola told me, brother. She asked about you all day when I had her working with me in the barn. You let her go to bed horny. You can’t be doin’ that. When I asked her why, she didn’t wanna tell me. But she did.”
I wanted to kiss her after we had the best night of my life. It was a thank you. For letting me feed her. For reading with me… and…
Fuck.
She just…
She kissed me… and I thought my heart would dig out of my chest to get to her. I couldn’t stop shaking. It just sorta happened.
Then I ran away like a coward and didn’t even say goodnight.
How the fuck am I supposed to face her now?
I kill men, and it doesn’t fuckin’ register, yet this…
Fuck.
“You came in your pants. So, what?” Rot huffs, and I can tell he’s trying not to laugh. “Do you think she’s gonna care? She’s not. She probably thinks it’s hot.” A grin splits his normal lips as he looks at me and winks.
Coffin chuckles with that deep voice of his. “Oh. She does. She said so.”
“See.” Releasing my arm, Rot tosses the leftover supplies back into the kit. “Now go clean yourself up and talk to her,” he says as he drops the stuff back into my drawer and kicks it shut with the toe of his boot .
Since when are they the authority on how to talk to women and have their shit together?
“She’s in the kitchen with Mama.” Coffin wipes both sides of my knife on the side of his thigh to clean the blade before he kneels and slips it back into my boot. “Don’t do that shit again. One month. We agreed.”
I suppose we did.
Sauntering over to the door, Rot opens the stupid thing, bows like an idiot, and sweeps his hand like a butler for me to exit.
I flip them off on my way out, and they laugh.
“Go get her, tiger.” Rot roars to cement his stupid point as Coffin adds, “If you need any extra hand or four, you know where to find us.”
Fuckers.
I hate ‘em.
Only I don’t.
A microscopic smirk breaks the surface as I head to my bedroom to shower, shave, and seek out Sola.
One month.
It’s only one month.
I can do this.
