Max blew out a breath. “Unbelievable.”
“What is?”
“How well you’re taking it.”
“Yeah, I’ve no idea. Maybe I’m just getting too old to mess around now.”
“You’re not old!”
“I’m twelve years older than you, Max. I’m nearly forty.”
“I know, and I don’t care.” Max put his plate down, reached over to take Trent’s plate and climbed on his lap. “You’re mine?” he whispered when his face was close.
He nodded. “And you’re mine.” A statement, not a question. He grabbed the back of Max’s neck and pulled him down for a kiss.Pulling away, he kept Max where he was but reached for his phone. “Hold on a second.” He sent a message to Jocelyn and Harper telling them to be there tomorrow at six. Then he focused back on Max.
Later that evening, they warmed the food up again.

Chapter 13
Max
When Max arrived at Trent’s apartment at five-forty-five the next evening, before he even got in the door, he could smell the dinner Trent had obviously been cooking.
“Wow, that’s smells delicious,” Max commented as Trent opened the door for him.
“Nah, nothing special. Cottage pie is all. I just know it used to be my kid’s favourites, so thought I’d soften them up a bit.” Trent laughed.
“I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”
“What?” Trent returned to the cooker, put oven gloves on and placed the dish into the oven. Max watched his ass as he bent, getting distracted from Trent’s question. “Max?”
“Huh?” He refocused on Trent, seeing he was smirking at him.
“See something you like?”
“Shut up.” He threw a towel at him, laughing.
“So, what’s either a good thing or a bad thing?” Trent came over and wrapped his arms around Max’s waist.
“That the kids might need softening up.” Max was a little apprehensive about meeting the two girls, but he tried not to show it.
“They’ll be fine. Harper might struggle a little, but Jocelyn will be all right and will help bring Harper into the fold. We’ve nothing to worry about.”
“Okay.” He kissed Trent, unable to resist his mouth being so close. It got a little out of hand until a throat clearing made them jump. Max swung around, wiping his mouth.
There in the doorway stood Trent’s two kids, staring at them with differing expressions.
“Hey, come on in.” Trent brushed past him, walking over to them and enveloping one in a hug. The other stepped back and closed the front door. Trent let go of the first one and walked to the second. She didn’t go in for a hug but allowed Trent to kiss her cheek. “Come meet Max.”
Max took a breath and walked further out of the kitchen area. “Hi, nice to meet you both.”
Trent gestured to each in turn. “This is Jocelyn, and this is Harper. Girls, this is Max.”
“Hey, Max,” said Jocelyn, smiling.
“Hey,” said Harper, nodding her head slowly.
