FORTY-FIVE
M orning sunlight spilled through stained glass windows in the sleuth elders’ meeting hall, painting rainbow patterns across ancient wooden floors. Meara’s fingers found Artek’s, squeezing tightly as they faced the semi-circle of distinguished shifters.
The hall’s grandeur took her breath—ornate tapestries depicting bear shifter history draped the walls while intricate wooden carvings decorated every beam and column.
“Bring forth the Lopez family,” the head elder commanded, his silver beard catching the light. His voice carried the weight of centuries of shifter authority.
The remaining Lopez clan shuffled forward, their shoulders slumped in defeat. Felicia’s usual sharp features appeared drawn, dark circles shadowing her eyes. The loss of both German and Miguel had clearly shaken their family’s foundation.
“You stand before us,” the elder’s tone turned harsh, “having brought dishonor to our sleuth through acts of sabotage, attempted murder, and the violation of our most sacred laws regarding the protection of mates.”
Another elder, a striking woman with steel-gray hair, leaned forward. “You attacked an innocent human woman seeking to build something beautiful on land that was rightfully hers. When that failed, you attempted to burn her alive.”
“And when your brother died for his crimes,” a third elder added, fixing Felicia with a stern glare, “you had the audacity to threaten Artek’s mate at a sleuth gathering. Your behavior shames us all.”
Felicia’s face flushed dark red. “The land?—”
“Silence!” The head elder’s roar shook dust from the rafters. “You dare speak of land claims when your family’s greed has led to death and destruction? Were it not for Artek’s remarkable restraint in dealing only with those who directly threatened his mate, your entire bloodline might have faced extinction for your crimes.”
Vida rose from her position among the elders, her elegant frame radiating authority despite her small stature. “As both an elder and mother to the mate you threatened, I move for immediate exile. The Lopez family has proven they cannot be trusted to uphold our values or respect our laws.”
“Seconded,” the steel-haired elder declared. “All in favor?”
A chorus of “aye” rang through the chamber.
The head elder nodded gravely. “So be it. Meara Adams’s claim to the cabin and surrounding lands is hereby confirmed beyond any challenge. Furthermore, the Lopez family is permanently exiled from the Northern Winds Sleuth territory. Any attempt to return will be met with immediate and severe consequences.”
He turned to address the entire gathering, his voice carrying renewed authority. “Let this also serve as a reminder to all present of why the Northern Winds Sleuth has prospered under Artek Riggs’s leadership. As alpha, he maintains our laws not through brute force, but through wisdom and restraint. Despite the Lopez family’s grievous attacks on his mate—a crime that would have justified far bloodier retribution under shifter law—he chose justice over vengeance.”
The steel-haired elder nodded in agreement. “Our alpha’s measured response, even in defense of his mate, shows why our sleuth remains one of the most respected in the region. He protects our traditions while adapting to a changing world, as evidenced by his support of this new artistic sanctuary within our territory.”
“The council acknowledges and appreciates your continued dedication to our people’s safety and prosperity,” another elder added, inclining his head respectfully toward Artek. “Your father would be proud of the leader you’ve become.”
He turned to Meara, his stern expression softening. “You have shown remarkable courage and grace under extraordinary circumstances. Your desire to create a place of artistic haven, even in the face of violence, speaks to a strength of spirit our sleuth deeply respects.”
Vida stepped down from the elders’ platform, approaching Meara with open arms. “As both an elder and your future mother-in-law,” her eyes sparkled despite her formal tone, “I officially welcome you into our sleuth. Your creativity and resilience will enrich our community for generations to come.”
Applause thundered through the chamber. Meara blinked back tears as Artek’s arm slid around her waist, anchoring her against the wave of emotion. The Lopez family slunk away, their exile beginning the moment they crossed the threshold.
“Well!” Frenchy’s bright voice cut through the formal atmosphere as they exited the hall. “That was deliciously dramatic. Though I must say, those tapestries could use a serious update. Perhaps something in a more contemporary palette?”
Trey snorted. “Pretty sure thousand-year-old shifter artifacts are off-limits for redecorating.”
“Everything can use a refresh, darling. Speaking of which...” Frenchy’s green eyes sparkled with mischief. “Now that the property drama is officially over, we can focus on more important things. Like when you two lovebirds are making it official.”
“Frenchy!” Meara laughed, but Artek’s arm tightened slightly around her waist.
“Actually...” He pressed a kiss to her temple. “I might have plans for that.”
“Ooh!” Frenchy clapped his hands. “Do tell!”
“Not a chance.” Artek’s growl held no real heat. “You’ll find out when it happens.”
“Spoilsport.” But Frenchy’s pout quickly transformed into a grin. “Though I suppose I can be patient. For about five minutes.”
Vida and Carys joined them, both women barely containing their excitement. “The garden will be lovely this evening,” Vida mentioned casually. “Perfect weather for a walk by the lake.”
“Mother.” Artek’s tone carried fond exasperation.
“What? I’m simply commenting on the weather.” But she winked at Meara. “Though if anyone happened to be planning anything special, I might have some suggestions about romantic locations.”
