Story: OverKill (Ali Reynolds #18)
SEDONA, ARIZONA
SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 2023
4:00 P.M.
Ali Reynolds was having a perfectly wonderful day. Cami was on her way home from Tokyo with Dozo’s signed contract in hand, and Ali was preparing to play hostess for that year’s Amelia Dougherty Scholarship Tea. The caterers were there and setting things up. Both of this year’s recipients, Daniel Knowles and Susan Rojas, would be in attendance. Daniel’s parents, finally realizing his college education wasn’t going to cost them an arm and a leg, were also expected to attend, as was Susan’s great-grandmother. The event’s guest of honor, newly minted veterinarian Dr. Meredith Glenn, would be there along with her mentor, Dr. Sophia Kaluznaicki.
Ali was in the bathroom putting on the last of her makeup when Frigg called. “Good afternoon, Ali,” Frigg said. “I hope you’re having a pleasant day.”
“I am,” Ali answered. “A very pleasant day.”
“I have news,” the AI continued.
Ali’s heart fell. More often than not, when Frigg called with a news brief, it wasn’t good.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“The London Times is reporting that London-based cybersecurity tycoon, Mr. George Smythe, was taken into custody yesterday by agents from Inland Revenue on multiple counts of money laundering and tax evasion. He is also expected to be charged in the murder of Adrian Willoughby. I will provide further details as they become available.”
Ali breathed a heartfelt sigh of relief. “Thank you, Frigg,” she responded aloud. “Thank you so very much. You’ve just made my perfect day that much better.”
