CHAPTER 45

Ghost

“ S eriously, Ghost. How many of these fuckers do you think you need?” Rue asks, the box she’s pillaging through thuds against the table as she drops it, kicking up a little dust in its wake.

“Well, considering they almost always get blood on them when I wear them… a lot.”

“I guess we can use them for toilet paper if we get in a bind,” she says, slipping one out and sliding it over her face.

“If you want to rub your ass on my mask, it’ll be when I’m wearing it,” I growl, dropping the case of water down on the table beside the rest of our supplies and stalking towards her. She spins around, her blue eyes shining with the shit-eating grin I know she’s hiding behind the skull mask.

“Or… maybe I’ll wear it while you show me what that filthy mouth of yours can really do.” Her voice is dripping in equal parts of sarcasm and seduction, her sexy confidence going straight to my cock.

My hand encases her throat, pressing my mask and collar into her delicate skin as I push her against the table and tower over her. “Is that what you want, Death? Me to get on my knees and worship your pretty pussy like a queen?”

Her breath catches against my palm, her big eyes fluttering as she tries to keep them open and on me. She’s been insatiable the last few days at the cabin. After we decided to make the trip down to Florida to find her friends, we’ve been packing up supplies and getting the cabin ready to leave. We don’t want to waste resources we’ll need when we get back. It’s time-consuming, but I’m glad we could spend these few days together, safe in our own little bubble away from the chaos that’s waiting for us on the road. I’d stay here forever with her, but I know more than anything, she needs her friends to be okay. So I can be selfless and do this with her—for her.

“Ye-yes,” she says, her voice wavering as my fingers flex on her pulse, not cutting off her air but controlling the rush of blood on my command.

My lips crush into her covered ones hard before I pull back and drop my hand from her throat. “Then be a good fucking girl and help me get packed,” I say, spinning her around and smacking her on the ass. “We’ll never get on the road at this rate.”

“Sometimes I really want to kick you in the dick,” she mumbles beneath the mask before she slips it off and throws it at me. “Fine. Let’s get this truck packed up.”

“Well actually… I was thinking we could leave the truck here.”

“Uh, well, how are we going to get to Florida then, sir?”

“Come with me,” I say, grabbing her hand and pulling her to the back of the basement and up the stairs. She hasn’t fully explored the cabin since we’ve been here, so she looks confused when we get to the top and exit into a building that’s built into the mountain.

“Wow,” she breathes, letting go of my hand to spin in a circle. “This is… just wow.”

The building is tall, with a training area, weapons cache, and our personal vehicles we keep here when we’re working. Most importantly, the biggest vehicle of them all, our mobile command center. “I was thinking we’d be more comfortable in this,” I tell her, pointing to the huge RV, fully equipped with everything we need for extended jobs. ‘Who knew my line of work would prepare me for an apocalypse? Everything we need to survive on the road is right here, and plenty of room to bring your friends back with us.”

“Ghost… I don’t know what to say,” Rue says, her voice breaking with emotion. “Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me, baby girl,” I say, taking her into my arms and kissing the top of her head. “I love you, and if that means burning the world to the ground to find your friends, I’ve got some matches around here and plenty of gasoline.”

“I love you more,” she sniffles into my shirt, holding me tightly to her like she never wants to let me go.

Same, baby girl. Same.

“I loved you first.”
