“Zaya!” Cadence cried, crashing through the door.
“Cadence,” I sobbed, rushing into his arms.
“Shh,” he said, running his hand up and down my back. “I’m so sorry, love. I got your message, then my phone’s battery died before I could call, and I couldn’t find the charger. I decided that it was better to get home rather than waste time.”
“Take me to the birth center?”
He nodded into my neck. “Let me get the go bag, and we’ll head right over.”
I sniffled and let him lead me to the car. Then he rushed back into the house and reappeared with my labor bag.
A quick drive and a few minutes later a midwife was helping me into a large tub, where the warm water immediately helped with the pain.
Cadence played the music I’d asked for and turned on small LED candles for ambiance.
I immediately relaxed. My alpha was there, and I was about to have the birthing experience that I wanted.
Cadence knelt next to the tub and rubbed my shoulders and back while praising me and telling me how much he loved me.
I managed to stay in the water until it was almost time to start pushing. Then Cadence and the midwife helped me to the bed.
After that things became a blur of pain and noise, then clarity as my baby was placed on my chest.
“Look at him,” Cadence murmured, kissing my forehead. “He’s perfect.”
I started crying, and I didn’t know if it was the perfect baby in my arms, happiness, lingering pain, or a mix of it all.
Cadence smiled. “I know, omega-mine. I know.”
He leaned in and kissed me before moving aside to cut the cord.
“What’s his name?” the nurse asked as she appeared beside me.
“Bryce,” I said softly, unable to tear my gaze from his tiny face and hands.
“Welcome to the world, Bryce,” she said. Then she turned back to me. “I’ll give you another minute before I take him to weigh and measure.”
I nodded, nudging his hand with a finger.
It took me a minute before I noticed the absence of my mate, then I saw him walking over, bearing a huge bouquet of flowers.
I started sniffling again.
“Thank you,” Cadence said.
“For what?”
He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “For coming into my life, and completing it. Nine months ago I was alone and searching for my forever, then you were there and it was like a light was flipped on. You’ve brought so much radiance and joy to me, and now you’ve even given me a son. I can’t tell you enough what it means to have you in my life.
“I love you Zaya.”
“I love you too!” I sobbed.
He smiled and kissed me again, then twined his fingers with mine on our son’s back.
I couldn’t wait to see where life with this man and our family took me.
