“I want it to be.” She squeezes his hand tighter. “There’s something between us. Something I can’t describe and I can’t explain.”

“I told mum and dad.”

“Oh fuck, why Finn? I wanted to tell them.” She could kill him. His version of everything will set their minds against Jack right from the start.

“Well, you can tell them when you get back.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“They got home early this morning. It’s meant to be a surprise — that I’ve just ruined.”

“But they aren’t due home for another fortnight.”

“They’re worried about you.”

“Oh, great.”

“They’ll come around. Mum’s halfway there already.”

Leaning into the seat, she rolls her head to the side and watches her brother, a faint line between his brows. There’s something else, something else that’s been bothering him. “What’s wrong?” she whispers.

He flips his head from the road to glance at her. “What?”

“What’s wrong, Finn? Something has been on your mind? I can tell.”

“You mean, you and Jack.”

“No, something else.”

His hands flex on the steering wheel. “Rebecca.”

“The girl from the club.”

He sighs. “Yeah, the girl from the club.”

“I didn’t realise that was serious.”

“I guess that’s the problem. Neither does she.”

“But you want it to be?”

“Yes, but she’s one of those princess types who lives in those big houses out Guildford way. I’m her bit of fun. I’m not good enough for anything serious.”

“She sounds like a bitch, Finn,” she can’t help but gasp.

“She is. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.” He reaches over and pushes her lightly on the arm. “Be grateful Squirt, that the one you want, wants you back.”

“You’ll find someone like that too, Finn.”

“I know,” he says.

The land flattens and in the distance she can spot the spire of the church reaching tall and straight above the winter trees and suddenly she wants to be home.

“Will you drop me at Jack’s?” she asks him.

“They’re waiting for you at home. Probably with balloons and cake and flowers.”

“I won’t be long. Will you drop me?”
