Chapter Nineteen

Kaleb

T he sound of knocking wakes me from my sleep and I instinctively grab Holly and point her at the window before I've even opened my eyes. When I see Myra staring at me through the window with a look of amusement on her face, I scowl and lower my gun as I use my other hand to wipe at my eyes, attempting to clear the blurry vision.

A yawn escapes me as I gather my bearings and open the car door, waiting for Myra to step back so I can climb out and then I stand there and stretch as she watches me with a hint of a smile on her weathered face.

"Why are you watching me like a creeper, Myra?" I ask, tucking Holly into my waistband and closing the car door.

"You're one to talk," she scoffs, patting me on the back lightly and walking past me towards the house. "You've been out here for three hours, so I thought I'd wake you up before your head slumped any more. Wouldn't want you to wake up with a crooked neck and be even grumpier than you usually are."

I glare at the back of her head as she laughs to herself and then I follow her into the foyer, yawning again.

"Looked like you were having a rather peaceful sleep out there. I wonder if that has anything to do with our new house guests," she says, stopping at the double doors between both staircases and turning to face me with raised brows.

"Go to bed and stop being nosey, Myra," I grunt, shaking my head as if I disapprove of what she said.

I silently make my way up the stairs and when I reach the landing, I ignore every logical thought in my mind and turn left instead of right.

I'll only check on her and make sure she's okay, then I'll leave her room and go to my own.

I repeat that thought in my head as I stroll down the hallway.

I whisper it to myself as well as I get to her door and pull the handle down, letting myself in.

I repeat it again as I walk towards her bed, scanning her covered figure and studying the subtle movement of her chest to confirm that she's breathing.

Once my eyes land on her face and I see how peaceful and perfect she looks, I take a step towards her and reach out my hand, smoothing my thumb across her cheek. Her eyes flicker open, and a small crease forms between her brows before she closes them again. Then, she releases a soft hum, snuggling deeper into her pillow.

As I stand there, continuing to watch her, I can no longer remember the words I was repeating in my head.

After a few moments, I step away from her, not wanting to chance waking her up again. Instead of leaving, I take my jacket off, set it on the floor, and sit beside it, leaning my back against the wall and keeping my eyes fixed on her sleeping form.

Maybe it's wrong of me to sit here, invading her space and watching her whilst she's sleeping and vulnerable, but after the events of today, I need to keep her in my sight for a little while longer to convince myself that she's safe and that nothing's going to happen to her.
