TWO MONTHS LATER
The hallway was bustling with people, as other new students and their families moved them into their university residence rooms. I’d come early in the morning, and my dad and sister had already left to try to beat traffic on the way home.
I left my door open while I finished setting up my room so people could introduce themselves as they walked by.
So far, I’d met my RA, the girls who lived in the rooms on either side of me, and a guy who lived down the hall.
Everyone seemed really nice but I was a little sad that none of my high school friends were on my floor.
Madison, at least, lived in my building, down on the second floor, while I was on the fifth.
But Jaxon, Sabrina, and Eli all lived in a residence building across campus.
Even if it was only a few minutes walk away, I hated to be far from them.
I was organizing my desk and I heard a small knock on my door. I spun around with a big smile, prepared with my “Hi, I’m Violet! What’s your name?” speech. But instead of seeing someone new, I saw Jaxon Andrews standing in my doorway, holding a bouquet of flowers.
“Excuse me,” he said. “I’m so sorry to bother you, but I’m looking for my girlfriend.”
Girlfriend. Even though it had been two months since the prom, hearing him call me his girlfriend still made my heart beat a little too fast.
I squealed and ran straight at him, jumping into his now outstretched arms. We had really perfected this move over the summer. He even held the flowers out to the side so they didn’t get crushed while also managing to catch me.
“Wow,” he said. He sounded a little winded. “You’d think it had been years since we saw each other.”
I kissed his cheek. “Well, this past week has felt like years!”
He’d gone up to a cottage with no cell service or wifi for the past week with his family, so there had been absolutely no contact. I’d been waiting for him to call me all day but this surprise was way better and worth the wait.
He kissed me properly.
“Well, we don’t need to worry about that anymore,” he said. He kissed me again. “We’re together now.”
Together now . Not just now, but forever; and I couldn’t wait to see what the future held for us.
