“Sure, why not?” he replied. “I seem to be collecting all kinds of people, who haven’t had a whole lot of experience with abilities, or those who have had a lot of experience with their particular brand of ability but haven’t had the exposure to learn what else there is to these gifts.
And believe me that there is a lot more to learn.
And the more we learn in our corner, the more we understand that we’re not even close to tapping the potential of the psyche.
So, if you want to come spend some time with us after this is over, I would be happy to have you. ”
“What about Morrison?” she asked curiously.
A note of laughter filled his tone when he asked, “What about him?” When she hesitated, he chuckled, a teasing tone evident in his voice. “Yes, he can come too.”
“That would be lovely,” she said. Then she took a deep breath. “I’m not exactly inviting him to come with me,” she clarified immediately.
“That’s exactly what you were asking, asking if he wanted to be there or could be there,” Terk corrected, with a smiling radiance to his words.
“Believe me, when you get to this stage, there really are no secrets. You see energy. You feel energy. You hear the energy, and, at some point in time, you just give up trying to hide emotions or anything else along that line. We have many solid partnerships among my team members, and they’re all a big family at this point.
One way or another, when problems crop up in their relationships, we know when an argument is happening.
No way to hide it,” he said. “Therefore, everybody works very hard at clearing their own issues, so that they don’t drag other people into it. ”
“Isn’t that hard?”
“No relationship is perfect,” he noted, “but considering that you and Morrison both have abilities,… that’s a hell of a good place to start.” And, with that, Terk rang off.
She had barely put down her phone when someone knocked on her bedroom door. “Come in,” she called out.
The door opened, and Morrison stepped in. “Your brother is awake at the hospital, and we’re allowed to go see him.”
She stared at him in shock for a moment and then bolted out of bed. “Give me five,” she cried out.
“Five does not give you time for coffee.”
“We’ll get coffee at the hospital.” When he stared at her in horror, she smiled. “Okay, we’ll pick up coffee afterward.”
And, with that, he quickly withdrew.
She dressed in double time, and, when she stepped into the other room, he was already standing at the door. She grabbed her purse, and they were outside and climbing into the vehicle he’d arranged as fast as she could make it.
“I figured you would want to go quickly,” Morrison shared, “and, if the hospital was giving us clearance to talk to Don, I figured we better get there before they changed their minds.”
“I thought for sure that we wouldn’t be able to.”
“I’m pretty sure that Gage has been working on them overnight.”
“Is he there at the hospital still?”
“Yes, he’s been standing guard all night,” Morrison confirmed.
“Shouldn’t you have gone to relieve him?”
“No, ma’am,” he stated, with a smile.
“Right, so you are on guard duty over me, right?”
“If that’s the way you want to look at it, yes,” he confirmed. “Absolutely no way we’ll let anybody else die on this case if we can stop it.”
“And yet I’m not connected to the jewelry heists at all.”
“No, but that doesn’t mean that somebody isn’t all about taking advantage of your situation, your abilities, and, for all you know, that’s how your brother Don got into this.”
“Oh God,” she muttered, as she thought about it. “That never occurred to me. He might have been blackmailed into it.” She had to admit she was absolutely thrilled to have any alternative theory as to how her twin brother had gotten involved in this mess. But chances were, Darren had brought Don in.
“I’m just throwing out suggestions,” Morrison stated. “Not necessarily good ones, but there are always other ways to look at things.”
“Right.… I talked to Terkel this morning.”
“I heard you,” he noted.
“Oh.”
“Just through the doorway,” he added. “I wasn’t listening in on your phone call.”
“No, I wasn’t thinking that,” she murmured. “But Terk did say that I could come visit his place and maybe learn to do more.”
He gave her a big smile. “That’s a hell of an offer.”
“That’s what I thought,” she said, returning his smile. “It’s a nice offer if it’s something that I can make happen, though I’m not sure I can.”
“When this is over with, you’ll have all kinds of options ahead of you, so don’t knock those down.”
“No, I won’t do that,” she said. “It just all feels so very strange at this point.”
“Of course,” he agreed. “But, at some point in time, you will adjust and will become a little bit more comfortable with it, and that will make it all easier.” They were pulling into the hospital parking lot when his phone rang.
He hopped out of the vehicle as he answered Gage’s call.
“We just pulled into the parking lot, so we’ll be up into the room in a few minutes. ”
Morrison pocketed his phone, reached out a hand to Sadie, which she quickly grabbed, then ran in to avoid staying outside too long. “Your brother is awake, and, while we’ll go in and talk to him, the police will also be there.”
“Right.” She winced. “Don won’t like that, will he?”
“Oh, I don’t imagine so. We also don’t necessarily have any proof that he’s involved.” She came to a dead stop and stared at him. He nodded, and then shrugged. “Remember?”
“What?”
“So far it’s been mostly your insights.”
“ Great .” She stared at him in horror. “So, that’s back to me being the reason he is where he is.”
“We don’t know anything about why he’s where he is,” he reminded her. “Keep that in mind. Whatever has happened to him, coming to the hospital, the heists, all of it,… none of that has anything to do with you. You are just relaying information—and saving his life. Remember that.”
She let out her breath and nodded. “It’s so easy to get messed up in all this.”
“It absolutely is,” he agreed, “but we just need you to stay calm, and let’s go see what Don has to say for himself.”
With a bright smile she walked up to see her twin brother.
Only as she got to the actual doorway, seeing Gage sitting there with a smile on his face, that it hit her.
She was about to go in and meet her brother for the first time,…
the first time he would be lucid anyway.
Then the nerves hit. “Maybe I shouldn’t go in,” she said suddenly.
Gage looked at her with a knowing expression. “That would be a shame, after all we’ve done to find him.”
“I know, but now I feel as if I’m the one who found him,” she cried out, “and I’m the one who’s responsible.”
“Did you poison him? Did you do anything to put him in the hospital?”
“No, of course not,” she declared, staring at him with a frown. “What do you mean?”
“Then you’re not responsible for what put him here,” Gage stated.
She glared at him. “Morrison has been saying the same thing.”
“Yeah, but you’re ignoring him too, I guess,” Gage stated, with a bright smile. “Not smart.… I get it, kind of, but right now you’re nervous, upset, and worried. However, that is nothing compared to the way Don’s feeling.”
“Has anybody been in to talk to him?” she asked.
“Yes, the police were here earlier, and basically he’s not talking.”
“He might not be talking now either,” Morrison noted, “but we still need him to talk.”
Gage nodded. “We need him to give up some names.”
“But it could also involve my other brother, Darren.”
“Now that we have that name, believe me that the police are all over it, and they’re trying to track both brothers’ movements at the jewelry shops that have been robbed in the last little while,” Gage shared.
“So go on in and talk to Don, and, yes, everything is recorded, as a police officer will be in attendance as well.”
“ Great ,” she muttered. “How do I start? Hey, did you know you had a sister? Or what?”
“It is what it is,” Gage stated, giving her a hard look. “Be grateful you have this opportunity.”
She winced. “ Thanks for that too.” She walked to the door, took a deep breath, then turned the knob and stepped in.
*
Gage grabbed Morrison’s arm as he went to follow her. “How is she?”
Morrison shrugged as he pondered that. “She’s okay, holding up, but she keeps getting a pinging.”
“What?” Gage asked, confused.
Morrison nodded. “She’s receiving a ping, as she is a receiver.”
Gage’s eyebrows shot up. “That makes a crazy kind of sense.”
“It does.” He smiled at his friend and stepped into the room behind her. She hadn’t moved in from the doorway, just staring at the young man on the bed. His eyes were closed. One chair was at each side of the hospital bed, one was occupied by a cop.
The cop glared at her and Morrison behind her. “I’m staying in here.”
“That’s fine,” she replied, as she took several tentative steps toward the end of the bed.
The young man’s eyes opened wide, and he stared at her. Then his eyes widened in shock. He tried to sit up and then cringed as pain racked through his body.
She quickly sat down beside him, picking up one of his hands. They didn’t say anything to each other, as they both studied the face looking back at them.
Morrison felt like an intruder, as he came up behind Sadie and asked, “Don, how are you doing?”
Don swallowed hard, looked at him, then her, and back at him.
“Yes, it’s your sister,” Morrison confirmed. “Your twin sister.”
Don collapsed back on the hospital bed, closing his eyes to digest this information.
Then a moment later Morrison saw hot tears coming from the corner of Sadie’s eyes, and he felt his own heart wrench.
She wiped away her tears and whispered to Don, “I didn’t know you existed until recently. I’ve been looking for you everywhere since then.”
He rolled his head toward her, his eyes open, and he didn’t seem able to speak.
