“Why?” My voice quivered, my breath catching in my throat. “Were they… experimenting? On me? And I didn’t even know it?”

He wrapped his arms around me, folding me close.

“I have a full log of what they did,” Rekt answered, his voice soft and hesitant. “If you really want to know. Mostly they simply studied you.”

“But…?”

“They did take a sampling of eggs from both of your ovaries. Those samples were removed from the ship to an unknown location.”

My throat closed off. My stomach churned. They’d taken eggs from me. To make little dynos hybrids in a laboratory. What if they were successful? What if I had a baby like Akylla somewhere, caged and trapped?

I jerked against Syko. Struggling. Space. Comfort. I didn’t even know what I wanted. Couldn’t think for the dread. The horror.

Hands cupped my cheeks, steadying me. Rekt. He pressed his forehead to mine, while Syko squeezed me tighter against him, his head close to mine.

“It’s alright,” Rekt whispered. “We’re here.”

“We’ll get them back,” Syko vowed.

Tears choked me. “It’s not the eggs. I don’t care. But if they can make a baby, my baby, I can’t bear for it grow up trapped. Experimented on. That’s awful.”

“We’ll get them back,” he repeated. “Whether they’re eggs or not. They’re a part of you. We’ll be able to find them.”

“Plus you’re tracking Snyder’s controllers, right?” Rekt said. “That should lead us right to them.”

“If it’s any comfort, DSC hasn’t been successful in cloning human-dynos hybrids,” Spike added. “According to my databanks, humans weren’t compatible at all.”

Until Natalie. Who shared her mrions.

With me.

Still knotted inside me, Syko carefully shifted us around to lie on the couch, his arms cradling me against his chest. Sudden exhaustion made my eyelids feel like they weighed a million tons, but I couldn’t rest. Not now.

Rekt stayed on his knees beside us, holding my hands. “May I scan your health, Holly?”

Weary, I nodded, letting my eyes close. I barely felt the light tap of his implement on my temple. A few seconds passed. Unless I dosed off. I wasn’t sure.

“All is well,” he soothed, stroking my cheek. “Rest.”

“But—”

Syko’s chest rumbled against my back, a deep, soothing purr that pulled me down in a slow, irresistible spiral toward sleep. “I’ll hunt down that motherfucker, wherever he hides.”
