I made my way down the corridor through the throngs of students rushing to their next classes.
Through being the operative word, because I wasn’t weaving in and out of them. I was pushing forward without breaking stride, people forced to move aside. I couldn’t entertain that kind of aggravation while my mind was churning wildly.
I had a meeting with Cornelius at his home—specifically, his vault—later today.
He thought it was just a get-together. Unfortunately for him, it was anything but.
I’d uncovered something during my investigation into Sylas’s warning to Ariana. And it had taken some insanely deep, complicated spellwork to get there. The questions I had for Cornelius would fill in the final piece of the puzzle.
I would make fucking sure he answered them.
He had to.
The stakes were too high.
Because now I had proof: death could touch Ariana.
I managed to finish formulating my verbal attack plan just as I reached the classroom for Arcane Combustion it’s a fact.
You have finally found love and a wonderful familial unit with your foursome.
And Ariana is vitally important to the world.
As I told her when I conveyed that warning to her, she needs to endure, her Light is needed. She is needed.”
Cassius caught my eye.
I looked away and stared at the syringe in my hand.
“You’re a real difficult bastard, you know that?”
“What are you—”
“Of course you will be missed.”
As Cassius finished the healing and Sylas slowly sat up with a groan and thanked him, I held the syringe out to Cassius. “Take this to Cornelius. Break the link. I need to stay here and create more of his serum.”
He nodded. “All right.”
As he went to take the syringe, I grasped his hand. “Keep me posted. Promise me, Cassius.”
“You have my solemn vow, sorcerer.”
With that, he teleported out.
I spun back to Sylas.
I need to check in with V about how the scent tracking’s going—then we’ll get to work.”
As I turned to go do that, I felt his eyes on me. Stunned.
As if I’d actually leave him here to die.
Asshole.
