Devlin
Up by ten points with less than forty-seconds on the clock, Declan kneels for the final time while the rest of the team, coaches, families, and fans rush the field as confetti canons pepper the sky.
My quarterback hugs me and then Aggie and I embrace as the thrill of our win roars through the crowd.
Things move quickly, the league and the networks rushing the end of the field to set up a stage to announce the MVP and present team leadership with the championship trophy.
But that’s for Declan and the rest of the Scott family to deal with.
Me, I’m overrun by maroon jerseys—teammates, coaches, and fans hugging me, clasping my hand, and twirling me around—but I’m looking for one man in particular, the one I want to spend the rest of my life with.
Jepson and Jaxson rush past me and then he’s there, the most beautiful man I’ve ever met.
We rush toward each other and Rex wraps his arms around me in a big bear hug and twirls me around in the air. And then it happens. Caught up in the moment—neither of us thinking it through—we kiss while standing in the middle of the field on national television.
It’s not a rated X kiss, but it’s certainly not brotherly considering our lips part and tongues touch. We pull back sharply the moment we realize what we’ve done, but when I look into his eyes, I regret nothing. I want the world to know that I love this man as I take his hand in mine.
Of course, there is a reporter standing by—one not covering the trophy presentation—her slack jaw and wide eyes letting me know that not everyone has heard about our relationship.
She leaves her microphone down by her side as she leans toward us. “So the rumors are true? Devlin Frank fell in love with his teammate?”
If she didn’t have a dreamy look in her eye, and a sweet, hopeful smile spreading her lips, I might resent the non-championship related question. “Yeah, it’s true.”
“That is so great!” She bounces on her toes before she’s distracted by the voices in her ear which morph her from approving fan into sports reporter. “Can we do a quick interview about the game?”
“Sure.” I nod. Rex attempts to take a step away, but I clamp my fingers around his hand, desperate to keep him near.
He lets me know he isn’t going anywhere with a quick squeeze of my hand.
She brings the microphone up and stands beside me, turning to face the camera man.
“Devlin, wow, what an amazing game! Two-hundred and eighty-four receiving yards, seventeen receptions, and two touchdowns, you now hold the tenth highest record in the league for best receiving stats in a single game and the number one record in a championship. Obviously you and Declan were touted as the dynamic duo before preseason began, but you were able to keep your synergy going all season long. To what do you contribute your success?”
“Well, I’m lucky because not only am I on a great team with a fantastic quarterback, but many of the players are my best friends, so our communication and trust runs deep on and off the field.
My personal success is directly influenced by the love and support I get from my family.
I couldn’t and wouldn’t be here today without all of them.
” I glance meaningfully at Rex who smiles at me in return.
The reporter grins and dips her head. “What’s the plan for the off-season and do you see the Rangers heading into next year with the same dominance?”
“Last year, we were good. This year, we were better. I don’t see how we can’t continue to dominate with such a young, healthy, and hungry team.
Not only do we have a record-breaking offense and defense, but our special teams along with our second-string has performed better than most of the league.
We won’t be satisfied with one championship ring. ”
“And your off-season?”
Devlin smiles at me. “I’m going to spend time with my family and the man I love.”
