I t was autumn, and Belle was wrapped in a shawl as she hurried into the store with her baked goods and eggs.
“Got a letter for you,” Katie said.
Belle snatched at the offered letter and read it on the spot. “It’s from my friend, Maggie! She’s agreed to marry James, and she’ll be here in a month. I feel sorry for her traveling in this weather!” It was already getting cold outside.
“But you’re excited your friend is coming,” Katie said. “I can see it on your face.”
“I am. Oh, I can’t wait!” Belle put her hand on her stomach and smiled. “She can help me sew for the baby.”
“And I will as well. Though if we want to all do it together, it may have to happen here in the store.”
“I would agree to that!” Belle said. “I finished filling another crate of jam, but Everett didn’t want me carrying anything that heavy. He said he’ll bring it on Sunday morning.”
“That works for me. I sell out of whatever you bring within a few hours. I’m sure the men will be excited for more jam.”
As Belle walked home, her thoughts were on her future. She was married to the man she loved. There was a baby on the way. And Maggie would be there soon. Her heart was full.
