MATTEO

Don Sidovo meets me in a smoky room I use for our illegal gambling. My manager brings us vodka and chilled shot glasses and disappears.

“What is so important that I have to meet you here, Matteo?”

“I have information from Lucinda, Gabriella Moretti’s twin sister.”

At this, the don sits taller in the chair and pours us both vodka, which we toss back.

“Interesting. What did she have to say?” His eyes narrow with the hatred he has for the family.

The family that tore him apart and destroyed his young life.

I know he probably spent many years thinking about how he would kill his nemesis.

He’s been waiting for a legitimate reason to pull the trigger.

And I am the person who gives him his wish.

“Her sister is drugged. It appears Gabriella and my father were having an affair. Santino found out and killed my father. I have a letter of confession from my brother’s girlfriend, who was forced to deliver the poison that killed him.

I also have a note in Gabriella’s handwriting that matches this. ”

I pull two letters from my suit pocket and hand them to him. One is Gabriella’s last love note, and the other is my father’s note to her.

Alexsei holds the notes gingerly in his hands. He flips them open, and I translate what they say into English.

“This means we can kill him, and it will be justified. Granted, your father was wrong. He touched his wife. But he used an innocent to carry out the hit to throw us off his trail. We don’t use innocent women. We don’t kill women and children. And to drug his wife is unconscionable and demented.”

I pour us another vodka. We toss it back, and our empty glasses click as they touch the table.

“Do we make it personal? Or do we make a huge splash that leaves it open to interpretation?” I’m curious how we can handle this without causing more issues.

I already have one with the Irish. I don’t need to make more enemies back home with the Cosa Nostra retaliating against my family.

Nor do I want them shooting at us in the streets of New York to even the score.

“I’ll think about it. Of all the ways I’ve thought I’d kill him, I never saw this day coming to fruition.

When I was younger, I’m sure I would have killed him if I didn’t believe his daughter was already dead.

He’s a skilled manipulator. It’s as if he’s a magician, throwing up smoke screens to present one story while the truth lies under the surface. ”

“He’s a rabid man who needs to be put down,” I concede.

“That he is. Thank you for the information. You’ve been very valuable in this and other matters. I thank you. I’ll be in touch.”

Alexsei and I stand and shake hands. His two guards escort him out the back door, where his armored vehicle waits.

I’m relieved that we’ve found the man responsible for my father and Chiara’s murder. I’m sure there is a hitman in Sicily that I may never find. But we have the head of the snake, and for today, this is enough.

I have a bride who needs her wedding day. Then, I’ll meet with the Irish and put their feud to bed. After that, Alexsei and I will plan our revenge.
