“I wasn’t keeping it from you, if that’s what you think,” she said, timidly.

“That’s not what I think, but I’d like to know when you planned to tell me.”

“I only started suspecting I might be a few days ago. I haven’t taken a test yet.”

“Haven’t you had a period or two since we’ve been together?”

“I have, but they were both much lighter than usual.”

“What does that mean?”

“I could be further along than we think.”

I smiled. “I’ve been hitting it raw and shooting up the club since day one.”

“And I’ve been letting you.”

“’Cause you wanna have my baby.” She nodded. “And be my wife.” She nodded again. “Let’s go get a test.”

“Okay, but I need to shower.”

“And I need to fuck you in the shower.”

I stood with my semi-hard dick still lodged inside her. She wrapped her legs around my waist, and I walked us to the bathroom. After we had our fill of each other in the shower, we bathed, dressed in comfortable shorts and T-shirts, and headed to the nearest pharmacy. We arrived ten minutes later.

“Can you believe this is the first time I’ve bought a pregnancy test?” she asked as we looked at all the options.

“Really? You’ve never had a scare.”

She shook her head with her eyes still perusing her options. “I was on birth control from my late teens until my late twenties. Regardless, I’ve always made my partners wrap up. I have no trust in these niggas, and I didn’t want no diseases or babies.”

“I guess I don’t fit into that category, huh?”

She looked up at me with a shy smile before maneuvering her body into my arms. I happily wrapped them around her, palming her ass as I kissed her.

“I guess not. For some reason, I’ve always trusted you.”

“Because I’m a trustworthy man. I would never do anything to intentionally hurt you.”

“I believe you. Now, help me pick a test.”

It probably took us longer than it should have, but we finally chose three tests from three different brands. After paying for them, I ignored the speed limit, getting us back home. We rushed into our bedroom, and she dumped the contents of the bag onto the bed.

“You read the instructions on that one, and I’ll read this one.”

We tore open the boxes and scanned the instructions.

“You ready? Do you have to pee?”

“Yeah.”

We went into the bathroom, and before she sat on the toilet to pee on the first two sticks, I quickly opened the third test.

“Can you pee on all three at the same time?”

“I think so.”

I gave her the last test, and while she did her thing, I leaned against the sink, removed my phone from my shorts, went to the timer, and set it for three minutes. When she finished, I hit start.

“You look nervous,” I said, looking at her in the mirror as she washed her hands.

“You aren’t?”

“No. I’m surprised you are. You’ve been telling me for years how much you want kids.”

She dried her hands on the towel and turned to face me, leaning against the sink while I stood in front of her.

“That hasn’t changed, but this is happening fast. Are we ready to get married and be somebody’s parents? We’re still new, and?—”

“Are we?”

“Umm, are we what?”

“Are we new?”

“You don’t think so?”

“The sex is new, but besides that, what’s changed between us since we crossed that line?”

“Nothing.”

“Exactly. You’re still my favorite person to do everything with. Baby, that won’t ever change.”

The timer went off, and she grabbed my shirt, letting her head fall against my chest.

“You look and tell me what they say.”

“You sure you don’t want to look together?”

“I can’t. I’m too nervous.”

“Okay.”

I wrapped one arm around her and rubbed her back, while using the other to pick up the first stick. The excitement I felt as I read the first test, then the second, and finally, the last one, had me grinning like a little ass kid on Christmas.

“Baby.”

“Yeah.”

I chuckled at the nervousness in her voice before giving her the news. “You’re having my baby.”

She looked up with wide eyes. “What? Are you serious? You better not be playing with me.”

“I know how much you want this. I would never play with you like that.”

She turned to look at the sticks, each of which showed a positive pregnancy test. Her hand flew over her mouth as she gasped. I watched her in the mirror as she picked up one of the sticks to look at it more closely. Tears fell from her eyes as she took it all in.

“I’m actually pregnant,” she whispered through tears when she uncovered her mouth. “I’m having a baby.”

I wanted to tell my parents right away, but Devyn talked me into waiting until after our first doctor’s appointment. It made sense because we didn’t even know how far along she was. While she wanted to wait to tell them, she couldn’t do the same for Ginae.

Her best friend was just as excited as she was, and I was glad she had someone besides me to share the moment with.

Her mother had been dead for most of her life, and her relationship with her father was strained.

While they were on FaceTime, they came up with how she would announce it on social media once she was ready.

As she ended the call with Ginae, my phone rang. I sighed when I saw Maurice’s name. Unfortunately, I couldn’t ignore his calls or block him like Devyn did.

“Wassup?” I answered on speaker.

“You ain’t gon’ believe this shit.” The sound of his voice got Devyn’s attention.

“What happened?”

“Devyn packed up her shit and left me.”

“Word?”

“All her shit is gone, bruh. I mean everything.”

“Damn.”

“That’s all you can say is damn?”

“Nigga! I’ve been saying a lot of shit for a long time, and you chose not to listen. I don’t know why you’re surprised. She should’ve left a long time ago.”

“Damn, nigga. That’s how you feel?”

“How do you expect me to feel? I’ve watched you do her dirty since day one, and I been warning you to chill since day one. If you want sympathy from me, I ain’t got shit for you.”

I ended the call and was low-key pissed Maurice had called me with that bullshit. I looked at Devyn, and she was grinning like she’d just won some money, which caused me to smile as well.

“That was hilarious. Did you hear the desperation in his voice?” she asked.

“I couldn’t miss it. He’s stressed the fuck out and deserves every bit of stress he’s feeling and more.”

“Do you think he’ll press you when you see him?”

I shrugged. “If he does, all he’ll get is, ‘I stole your girl right from under your nose, got her pregnant, and I’m about to change her last name.’ I got nothing to say to his ass.”

“Whew! That would be cold.”

“Just say the word, and he won’t have to press me. I will voluntarily share that information.”

“Nah. I still want to be a little more subtle. I’m sure his next move will be to go to my job. Besides HR, only two people know I changed hospitals, and I trust them not to say anything.”

“It’s against the law for them to give that kind of information out anyway.”

“True. Let’s keep his ass guessing a bit longer.”

As we were talking, I got dressed. I needed to stop by ERL to check on a few things since I hadn’t been there in a few days. I also needed to stop by my condo to pack a few things to bring home, because all I had was what I’d packed for D.C.

Devyn walked me to the door, and we embraced.

“Are you planning to wait up for me?”

“I’ll try, but I’ve been exhausted these past few days.”

“Our little nugget is already kicking your ass?” I rubbed her still flat stomach.

“I guess so. If I’m asleep, you can always wake me up.”

She reached between my legs and grabbed my dick.

“If you keep playing with me, ERL will have to wait until tomorrow.”

“You go take care of your business and hurry home.”

“Damn! That sounds good as hell coming from those sexy lips.”

We kissed, and when our lips parted, she said, “I’ll be waiting.”

“I love you.”

“I love you more.”

I waited until I heard the locks on the door before heading to my car. Once inside, I said a prayer, asking God to give me the patience and strength to deal with Maurice if he was still on that bullshit.

As I merged onto the highway a few minutes later, I decided to go to my condo first. That way, I could head straight home when I left ERL. Twenty minutes later, I parked in my parking spot, and as I exited my car, Maurice approached me.

“I think she blocked my number.”

I shrugged. “If she left you, that makes sense.”

“All you got is jokes.”

“I ain’t told a joke yet. Where you headed?”

“To her job. If she’s not there, somebody in that bitch gon’ tell me where the fuck she at.”

“Two places you don’t want to act a fool are an airport and a hospital. Hit me up if you need bail money.”

I walked past him toward the entrance.

“Aye.” I paused and turned around. “Y’all be talking and shit. Have you heard from her?”

“Nah.”

The lie easily rolled off my tongue, and I continued into the building. I couldn’t wait to see how this played out.
