S he wakes to broad daylight and her bedchamber, and Olivia’s voice saying, ‘You have a daughter, Alice.’
Betsy’s voice follows. ‘Took her time making her appearance but she’s healthy and hollering like her father. Impatient like her mother. I wager she’ll be a red-head too.’
Olivia places the wrapped bundle next to her and she turns her head and sees a crumpled red face with closed eyes and a tiny nose and a mouth that suddenly yawns and closes again, and two tiny fists with perfectly formed fingers.
And she looks on the daughter of Henry and says ‘Henrietta,’ and cradles her daughter in her arms and goes back to sleep.
