Story: Light of the Witch (Keating Hollow Happily Ever Afters #3)
Yvette stood in her store and felt her heart swell with love and pride as she watched the patrons line up to make their purchases. It had been two days since they’d broken the spell, and everything was already back to normal. The bookstore was doing better than ever. The parts for the taps had come in overnight, and Keating Hollow Brewery was on track to double its profits over last year’s spring season. The spa’s plumbing was fixed, and Hunter was already replacing everything that had been water damaged. They’d be up and running within the next few days. The insurance company had already settled Chad’s claim over the break-in at the music store, and the wedding was back on, so Noel’s inn was full again for the rest of the week.
“Did you ever find that footage you were looking for?” Brinn asked just after she thanked another customer and directed them to Incantation Café for coffee cake and lattes.
“I did,” Yvette said. “It happened a week ago yesterday. Kariann, in the form of Marylin’s body, walked right into the store and placed that book right there.” Yvette pointed to the most prominent endcap. “Just like that, walked in, dropped it, and walked right back out. None of us ever saw a thing.”
“It probably wasn’t that hard to do if she came in on a busy day,” Brinn said.
“Sure,” Yvette agreed. But it still irked her. After Marylin had told her that the book was placed in her store, she couldn’t stop thinking about it and had searched all her security tapes until she’d found it. She decided right then that she needed a bell on the door to tell them when customers were coming and going.
The bell chimed, and when Yvette glanced over, she spotted her husband standing there with a bouquet of sunflowers. Her lips curled into a slow smile. “Well, hello there, handsome.”
“Hey, gorgeous,” Jacob said as he walked over, handing the flowers to Brinn. “These are for you,” he told her. “For being so generous.”
Brinn flushed as she took the flowers. “You really didn’t have to do this.”
“I know, but you’re covering for me so I can get my wife out of here for a while. It was the least I could do.”
“You’re what?” Yvette asked.
He held his hand out to her. “I heard you wished for a day for just the two of us. Maybe a ride up to the mountains?”
Warmth spread through Yvette’s chest as she realized this was a surprise date. “Jacob Burton, are you trying to butter me up for something?”
His eyes flashed with mirth. “You bet. Are you game?”
“Just as long as we stay far away from Moonstone Ridge,” she quipped.
“You got it. I think we’ve both seen enough of that place.”
They certainly had, especially since the Magical Task Force had let Marylin go, and Jacob had gone with Drew to take her home. He’d said her house was gorgeous, magazine-level gorgeous, and that in addition to flowers being in bloom everywhere, the field was full of lavender, making it one of the prettiest places he’d ever seen.
While Yvette had been happy to hear that Marylin was free of her sister’s ugly destruction, it wasn’t a place she wanted to revisit anytime soon. Even if it was deemed the prettiest garden in the state, she was going to stay far away. She’d already seen enough.
“How about we head to the beach instead?” Yvette offered.
“There is a mountain that direction, too,” Jacob said, pulling her closer to him. “I bet the kids would love it.”
“The kids are coming with us?” she asked, her heart nearly exploding.
“Yep. It’s family day,” he said with a wink.
Yvette threw her arms around him and said, “You know what, Jacob Burton?”
“What?”
“I love you more today than the day I married you. Now let’s go. The kids are waiting.”
“Just one second,” he said. Then he pulled her in close and dipped her dramatically before he whispered, “I love you too.”
Yvette stared up into his gorgeous eyes and decided that no matter what this life threw at them, she was more than grateful that she got to navigate every day with the love of her life. “Good, now I hope you packed snacks.”
Jacob just laughed and tugged her out of the store. When they got to the SUV, he opened her door for her and waved at the latte and coffee cake that was waiting for her. She grabbed him to her, kissed him thoroughly, and thought, I married the perfect man .
