His mouth hung open a little, his eyes glazed. “When did you start goingcommando?”

I laughed and bent to undo the buttons on his shirt. “I didn’t want to waste time on anythingtonight.”

“You are so much more organized than me,” Laine murmured, and I heard the noise of his zipper beinglowered.

I pulled him to his feet and peeled his shirt off him while he stripped the rest of his clothes off his body. Then he picked me up and tumbled us both onto the bed, where he kissed me until my toes curled and I started fighting to get my legsaroundhim.

“Hey, we have all night,” he whispered againstmylips.

“I missed you,” I told him and stroked his back with shakinghands.

“Shhh,” he said. “I’m all yours.” He kissed me again, then tucked his face in under my jaw to nibble at my neck. “Is this okay tonight?” he asked, his hand gliding down my body to stop just short of myomegaline.

I shuddered in response and wordlessly arced my belly up toward him. No more secrets between us, and if he wanted it, this part of me washistoo.

He made a small desperate sound, then dragged tongue and lips down my body until he was settled between my legs, the warmth of his breath sending sparks of desire along my omega line and through my body. I groaned, which he seemed to like, because he traced the tip of his tongue from one hip to the other, stopping to tease me or bite gently at my line and watch me with his alpha eyes as I struggled to do anything but surrendertoosoon.

“You’re gorgeous,” he whispered, and licked me there again, then sucked the end of my cock. I heard the sound of ripping cloth and realized, somewhere in my haze, that I’d torn one of the squares of the quilt loose from the others. Anxiously, I patted it flat, then looked up to find Lainewatching.

“I think that’s the biggest compliment anyone’s every given me,” he said mildly. “Out of curiosity, can you come just from this?” He ran his index finger in tiny circles over one end of myomegaline.

“You really want to know?” I gasped, and reached behind me to grab at the top of theheadboard.

“I do like evidence. Let’s find out.” His smile was wicked and my body flooded with the desire to let him find out. I nodded and then closed my eyes and waited with my limbs quivering inanticipation.

The headboard creaked in my grasp as my body tightened beneath him. He played my body like his piano, drawing music from me I didn’t know I held, and soon enough we discovered that, yes indeed, you could make an omega come just from his omega line. Laine laughed and wiped his cheek where I’d splattered him, then crawled up my body to kiss me in between my shudderingbreaths.

“I like that,” he murmured and I felt him reach down between us, nudging my thighs wider so he could push himselfinside.

“You’ve set yourself a high bar now,” I told him. “I might be looking for that everynight.”

“Sounds like a good relationship goal to me. One extra strong orgasm for Garrick, everynight.”

I wrapped my shaking legs around his waist. “One for you too.” I took one hand off the headboard and manhandled his mouth down to mine. He gasped and his hips began to move and I held him to my mouth so I could taste hispleasure.

The bed creaked beneath us and I pulled my other hand back from the headboard just in time. The rhythmic crack of it hitting the wall wasn’t nowhere near as loud as my heart, racing in time with Laine’s. I wound my arms around his neck and made him watch me, so I could watch him, see him come apart in my arms. That was my Midwinter presenttome.

As our bodies rocked together, I could see his desire building in him and I felt an answering one in my own. In Holland’s books, in that old journal he’d loaned me and that I’d only just been convinced to finish, it talked about something called the Omega’s Joy. The circumstances that made the writer speak about it were sad, but I was grateful for the information all the same. Because when an omega had found their proper mate, this second, deeper orgasm was made possible. I was fairly certain I’d already had one with Laine and it was that which had convinced Holland to lift the ban, at leasttemporarily.

I too, wantedevidence.

Laine grunted and tried to hide himself against my cheek, but I held him there so I could see him, and let him see me. That heavy tightness built in me, twisting inside me, inside him too by the increasingly frantic movements of his body. I watched his eyes go wide as he lost himself in my body, and then the storm rolled over me as well and I curled up into him and blessed all the forest gods formyluck.

Later, when we’d caught our breath and corralled our scattered wits, I remembered that I had something else for him. I’d planned to give it to him to open on Christmas, but in the aftermath of what we’d just done, it seemed to me that today, now, was a better time to give it to him. “Stay here,” I said, kissing his eyelids, then slid out ofthebed.

He lay back against the pillows, his eyes tracking me lazily as I padded across the room to the cupboards on the opposite wall. I reached inside and found what I was looking for, a small box carved by Duke that rattled when Ishookit.

I got into bed and sat with my back against the headboard. He propped his head up on one hand and curled the other arm around my hips. “Whatthis?”

“It’s yours.” I held it out to him and reminded myself tobreathe.

He gave me a strange look, but wiggled up right and leaned against the headboard next to me before pulling the top off the box. “Garrick?”

I reached inside and pulled out the ring. “I bet you didn’t know that Jason’s dad has been playing around with making jewelry out of wire since they moved to Mercy Hills.” It was made of steel, polished until it shone, the wire wrapped around and over itself until the surface was almost as smooth as something you would buy in a store. At the top, he’d twisted and bent some of them to form the logo for Mercy Hills. “I asked him to make this for mespecial.”

“What is this?” he asked quietly as he turned it over and over in hisfingers.

I laid my chin on his shoulder. “Not a question. A…promise, Iguess.”

“Does Holland knowaboutthis?”

I figured he’d ask this. “He worries about me. I’ve decided I’m not going to let that hold me back anymore. Yes, I have responsibilities to the pack, but I also have responsibilities to you. To us.” I kissed the point of his shoulder. “But he’s also the one who told me about Jason’s dad. Ask me again, in a couple of years. When things here aren’t so crazy. When our lives have settled down. I want to have the focus toenjoyit.”

The side of his mouth closest to me curved up. “Yeah?” He slipped it on, over the third finger of his right hand. “I’ll save the other fingerforthen.”
