Mom hummed. “I’m so happy for you sweetheart.”
“I’m happy too.”
“A mother can’t ask for more than that.”
I smiled. “Oh yeah!”
“What?”
“I got another bookkeeping client. I’m up to about thirty hours a week now.”
“That’s fantastic! It’s not too much is it?”
“No,” I replied. “I don’t think I’m going to try for much more right now though. I still have bad days, and want to make sure that I can deal with those and therapy and not get behind.”
“Good plan.”
I sighed. “I miss you.”
“I miss you too sweetheart.”
“I’m… I’m thinking about coming home for Christmas.”
“You know you’re welcome.”
“I’d,” I paused. “I’d like to invite Eli.”
“He’s welcome as well, if that’s what you want.”
I smiled. “It is. I haven’t talked to him about it yet since I wanted to ask you first.”
“Well I’ll meet him for sure if you bring him.”
I laughed. “I guess that’s an incentive.”
Mom echoed my laugh. “That, and from everything Kenzie has said he seems lovely. I want to meet the man who’s been so good for you.”
“I think you’ll like him.”
“You seem to, which isn’t a bad start.”
I decided not to sabotage the meeting between her and Eli by reminding her that at one point I liked Connor too. It was probably at the back of her mind anyway.
I glanced at the clock. “I’ve gotta go,” I said with a smile. “Eli is taking me to a corn maze.”
“Oh have fun,” Mom chirped. “I know you always liked doing those.”
“Mm-hmm, and he says this is a good one.”
“Talk to you in a few days?”
“Of course.”
“I love you sweetheart.”
“I love you too, Mom”
We said our goodbyes, then I headed to the bedroom to change. I had a date to look forward to.
