I thought I was the only one who understood what Lucian was going through, but I also didn’t know how to help him. More food wouldn’t help. I should probably be worried about what he wanted to eat, but I didn’t think it was people. Khalid was brilliant. He’d know about people eating gods.
Khalid seemed to be wanting to kill two birds with one stone. Maybe he was worried about Lucian eating people and didn’t want to say it in front of him so he didn’t get eaten.
“I really think you have super speed,” he insisted. “Something might be guarding it, but you could zip over to where the crystal is and scope it out. If nothing is guarding it, you could grab it and bring it back. I’ve got jackal senses, and that’s about it. Liam can talk to wildlife.
“Fairy is the English word, but they exist in several cultures across the globe. They all have different lore depending on the country, so we don’t know enough about Sage’s magic yet. You’re getting yours faster than us and faster than what Headmaster Mykene said was natural.”
“I’ve always been ahead of my peers.”
“When you say shite like that, I just want to kick you in the kidneys again.”
“I might have super strength,” Lucian shot back.
“The speed healing certainly takes all the fun out of it.”
“Could you do it?” I asked. “I get that you might be feeling woozy, but until we figure out how to feed you, it would get your mind off of it.”
“I think if I do have super speed, it’s not going to kick in until I eat something.”
I looked to Khalid since he was the scholar and a font of information. If Lucian was someone who ate people, then he needed to know that and Khalid should say it in front of him.
“Any gods you’ve come across in your studies with red eyes?” I asked.
“That’s a demon thing,” Liam said. “He wants to eat babies.”
“I do not!”
“Demons are like fairies,” Khalid said. “Every culture has a concept of them and honestly, even with supernaturals being real, some of that could just be humans using fear to control each other. There are several gods with red eyes, though. Anubis and Horus were related and Horus was said to have red eyes. You aren’t from the right region, but Kali did, too. Lucian could still be a god instead of an original. Ares was supposed to as well.”
“I still think he’s jonesing for babies.”
“He’s not going to be able to go without food for that long, so we’re going to need to figure it out. Especially with all the walking we’re going to be doing,” I said.
I might not know Lucian very well, but I knew what I was looking at. He wasn’t doing well and wouldn’t last much longer if we didn’t figure out what he needed. I got that Headmaster Mykene literally had no idea who any of us might have been in our previous lives. She only had guesses about Liam because of how he acted and she was wrong.
I guess I just felt like we should have been given more than just food rations just in case someone on our team needed something different.
