Inglorious.

I woke as my cell rang and groped mindlessly for it in the dark.

“Inglorious?” Nanci murmured as she rolled over. I glowered as I grasped my phone because I’d just lost body contact with Nanci.

“What?” I snarled into my phone.

“We’ve got an issue, you better come to Main Street,” Drew said.

“On my way,” I sighed and sat up.

“Don’t wake me up,” Nanci complained as she tucked the duvet in around her and went back to sleep.

“Nice!” I muttered as I got dressed and headed out.

I could see Drew’s police vehicle as I approached. I parked my hog outside the clubhouse and gaped at what Drew was looking at.

“They called this the hanging tree,” Drew muttered.

“Yeah, apparently they hung some outlaws from this,” I said as I gazed at the body swinging in the wind.

“This is a warning,” Drew stated.

“Yup.” It wasn’t a real body, luckily. It was a scarecrow, but it wore a cut, and someone had written ‘Murderer, Unwanted Bastards’ on it. The message was clear.

“Did the cameras catch anyone?” I asked.

“Two people. Same MO as before. All in black, with no identifying features. One looked at the camera and made a gun with his fingers and mimed pulling the trigger.”

“We expected an escalation. I guess this is it,” I replied.

“Did Hercules ever find anything on the camera footage?” Drew inquired.

“No. They probably used two different vehicles.”

“I’ll cut this down and keep it for evidence. But everyone needs to be alerted to this latest shit. You’ve got an enemy, Inglorious, and we’ve no clue who.”

Drew wasn’t wrong. Someone had targeted us, and I felt exposed. I couldn’t and wouldn’t lose another member. That was unacceptable. The Unwanted Bastards were under attack, with an invisible enemy. And this time we had no idea who was coming.
