On the contrary, it did fall under the umbrella of rejection. Megan visited New York as often as she could—two years prior, she had stayed for most of the summer. She and Sofia grew closer than ever, and Sofia got her wires crossed. The awkwardness of the situation smoothed over quickly and they now chose to joke about it.

“It’s okay, we were better off as friends, we both know that! Besides, I will find myself the perfect girl one day.”

“Are you trying to say I’m not perfect?”

“Perfect for someoneelse, yes.”

“Nice answer.”

“Stop changing the subject anyway!” Sofia side-eyed Megan, waiting patiently for her to divulge some moreinformation.

“She hasn’t texted me. I don’t know what more thereis to say.”

“Have youtexted her?”

“No...but—”

Sofia raised her eyebrows.

“Don’t give methat look.”

“What look is that?”

“The look you give me when I’m normally inthe wrong.”

“I didn’t realise I had a look for that, but I’m glad it works.”

“You think I should text her first,don’t you?”

“Yep.”

Megan dropped her bottom lip like a child throwing a tantrum. “But why? I told herto text me?”

“Have you ever thought that maybe she’s thinking the same thing? Waiting around for you to reachout to her?”

Megan rubbed at her forehead; she knew Sofia had a point. “I justassumed....”

“Never assume, Meg. That gets you absolutely nowhere.”

“You sound like my aunt.”

“You knowI’m right.”

“Yes, and it pains me to admit it.”

“Just text her now.” Sofia reached for Megan’s pocket. “Give me your phoneI’ll do it.”

She smacked her hand away. “There is absolutely no way I am letting you text anyone.”

They passed The Lake and made their way towards Shakespeare Garden. The picturesque body of water appeared so calm; the light summer breeze didn’t affect the flow of the water and two large swans made their presence known topassers-by.

“Stop admiring the view and just text her.”

“What do I say?”

“Just say ‘Hello’, and ask her when you’re going to seeher again.”
