Page 40 of His Obsession Her Cure

“ C harlotte Monae Anderson.” The loud cheers of the audience filled the auditorium as I waited to walk across the stage as I watched Char collect her degree.

I came to Brookview being chased by ghosts from the past with a few dollars and a dream and I concurred it all and created a life here.

Gunner was right when he said that Nyx’s job was to protect me when I couldn’t protect myself.

She took care of me until she found someone that could take her spot.

She knew that he would give me the type of unconditional love I got from my parents, helping me to accomplish my goals with our families’ love and support.

No more was I the broken girl that picked up Char at the bus station.

The broken girl, too traumatized to speak to people or be in a crowded room.

“Pepper Leila Hale, the commentator announced.” I could see the flash of cameras, but I had tunnel vision as I strode towards the dean of medicine at the podium.

As soon as my hand touched the diploma in her hand an explosion of thunderous voices echoed through the auditorium, as my crazy family jumped up and down, yelling at the top of their lungs. I can hear Gunner the loudest as I turned to face the crowd for pictures.

Standing in front of the stage with our three-month-old son Greyson.

He was holding our son in one strong arm with a bouquet of flowers in the other.

I beamed at the family I had fought, it was a long time coming but I made it and was able to finish what I started.

When I was close enough Gunner wrapped me in his warm embrace, cocooning me in the feeling of my peace.

The people who mattered most were all in attendance.

Tyron had even flown with his family to celebrate my accomplishment.

“Congratulations lil baby. I’m so proud of you.” He said, leaning down and capturing my lips with his that became more and more intimate as it went on. I was flushed when we pulled apart.

“And thank you Daddy." I said watching his eyes grow heavy with lust.

“Keep playing and you're gonna be bent over in the back seat of the truck while Greyson visits with Aunty Miko and Uncles Aren and Liam." Gunner said, whispering in my ear so only I could hear him.

“Don’t threaten me with a good time.” I smiled. Because I knew for sure they would all love that. You know he can’t stay away from Miko since she found out she was pregnant. She spoils my baby rotten. “Let’s go over to give Char her gift and then I’ll race you to the truck.” teased.

“Bet let’s go." Gunner said, placing his hand on my back and leading me through the crowd. Char and I exchanged hugs, gifts and congrats over the noise of the crowd. We had made it and now it was time to start a new journey. We had both been hired in the ED at the local level three trauma center part-time. Alestar refused to let her work full-time since finding out she was pregnant three months ago. And Gunner absolutely refused to saying I needed a work life balance, and we both had to make sure nothing we did interfered with raising our families. We both planned to take a year off to spend with the family. I mean we didn’t really need the money we would make practicing medicine, just the experience.

“Congratulations my babies.” Ma said, placing kisses on each of our cheeks. “Now give me my baby so y'all can go work on another one," she said, looking at the both of us like she knew what we were about to do.

“She's probably pregnant again now, Ma.” Aren laughed.

“Don’t let that worry you. Just make sure you remember not to call us to babysit when you Liam and Miko ain’t getting no sleep because nephew is keeping ya’ll up. Don’t act like you don’t know I’m the baby whisperer.” Gunner laughed at his now frowning brother.

It was never a dull moment with our family and I’m glad it never would be.

The best thing I could have ever done was getting on that bus to come to Brookville and if I had to do it all over again, I would always choose them.

I had finally found the love that we were chasing after my parents died, the type of love that would fill that hole inside us created by their loss.

The love Gunner showered me and our son with every day was the stuff of dreams and fairytales just like I prayed it would be.

His love had quieted the monster inside me.

He hadn’t slayed her. No, he had given her the love and safety she needed to retreat into the depths of my consciousness.

“Come on lil baby before they change their minds.” Gunner laughed, holding his hand out for me.

“Yes, Daddy.”
