F or the next four days, our routine remains the same. Wake up with Stevie sprawled across my chest. Take Stevie to work. Stay with Stevie while she works. Be seen in public. Go home. Eat. Go to bed, then repeat everything the next morning.
We haven’t practiced ‘kissing and touching’ since our first night of the plan, which is probably for the best. I’m not sure I could let Stevie out of our bed once I fully claimed her.
“If you’re bored, I’m sure I’ll be fine without you today.” Stevie brushes her hand against mine to get my attention.
There hasn’t been any trouble since I started hanging out with Stevie. Still, I’m not willing to take any chances. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I’d zoned out. It won’t happen again. You’re my top priority.” If she only knew how much she means to me.
"Okay," she smiles. “If you say so. But take it from me, this place is boring. I sometimes zone out myself.”
“Oh yeah.” I grab a can of soup from the box and put it on the shelf. I might as well be helpful and assist her in stocking the shelves. “What do you think about when you’re zoning out?”
“It’s silly, really.”
“Come on, you can tell me," I coax, taking the can of soup out of her hand and placing it on the shelf.
She picks up another can of soup, “If I had the money, I’d buy this place from Richard.” She glances around the store with a wistful look on her face.
“And what would you do if you owned it?” I turn her to face me, needing to have her eyes on me.
“I’d tear down that smaller back wall, the one that’s not load-bearing, and convert the second storage room into a craft boutique. We already have some great items that we sell from local people. I just want to help more people and have a bigger space so more folks can sell their goods.”
“That’s a really nice idea, Stevie.”
“Thanks.” She smiles softly. “What about you? What do you think about when you zone out?”
How badly I want to tell her the truth that it’s her I think about. But instead, I tell her a half-truth. “I think about settling down like some of my brothers have already done. Getting married and having a bunch of little rugrats running around.”
“Oh.” Her eyes widen. “Do you have a girlfriend back at the clubhouse?” She turns away, busying herself with straightening the cans on the shelf beside her.
“Because if you do, we really shouldn’t be doing this.
You need to go back to her. I’ll be fine on my own.
Or maybe Rock can send someone else to act as my fake boyfriend who isn’t already taken. ”
I gently grab her wrist, causing her to snap her gaze to mine in surprise. “If I already had a woman, I wouldn’t be here with you. I’m not that kind of guy.” I let go of her wrist, never breaking eye contact. “I’ve got my eye on someone,” my eyes drop to her plump lips, hoping she’ll get the hint.
If there were ever a time to admit my true feelings for her, now would be the perfect time, but my timing has never been perfect.
