What the hell was wrong with me? I’d never felt attracted to someone like the way I did with Raelynn, and it scared me. Because attraction that strong, well, it made you do fucking crazy things. Like get involved with a patient and possibly jeopardize my medical license. Something I’d worked so hard for. Something that provided for my kids and gave them a life they deserved.

But the reason she was here in the hospital was my fault. I owed her the best care after what happened. She could’ve died. It happened in minutes.

After contacting my overnight babysitter I used when medical emergencies came up, I spent the night tending to Raelynn and watching her vitals like a hawk. I was still waiting for a return call from the pharmacy. I wanted to know exactly what they gave her.

The babysitter took my kids to school, and I had until five before I had to pick them up from the after-school program. I planned on staying here, finding out answers, and making sure Raelynn was good.

I just needed to stick to my boundaries, and everything would be okay.

This damn woman has me in a chokehold, and I don’t know why. The last thing I need is for some stupid lustful attraction to ruin the life I created.

Back in the hospital,Leanne and Paulette stood outside Raelynn’s room, talking with two other doctors. As I approached, Leanne spotted me and waved me over.

“Dr. Walker, I was looking for you. We just heard back from the pharmacy and got some lab results in. Turns out the pharmacy gave Raelynn the wrong medication.”

“What?” I snapped, white-hot anger instantly rushing through me. “How did that happen?”

“We’re still looking into that. We’ll also run allergy tests to make sure there isn’t anything else she’s allergic to. Along with an EpiPen and an appointment with an allergist.”

“Good. Who the hell do they have working over at the pharmacy? She could’ve died.”

“We’re not sure who filled the script just yet. We’ll get all the information, though. Mistakes do happen. We need to remember that.”

“Mistakes shouldn’t happen when it could cost someone their life. Let me know when the information comes in.” I stormed off down the hallway and headed for a private room tomake a call. The pharmacy was about to hear my mouth, and they weren’t going to like it.

After chewing their ear off, I made my way back to Raelynn who was currently sleeping. I sat by her bedside and watched her breathe softly. I picked up her hand in mine and traced the outlines of her skin with one fingertip. Something kept pulling me toward her, and I couldn’t fight it no matter how hard I tried.

Several minutes later, her eyelids fluttered open, and I pulled my hand away quickly but not quick enough. She smiled wide and squeezed my hand. “Hi.”

“Hey.”

“Is there a reason you’re holding my hand?”

I should’ve let go. I should’ve dropped it right then and there. But like I said, I couldn’t fight it. And a part of me didn’t even want to.

Something about Raelynn felt different.Special. Maybe I was being a fool for love once more. But how would I know if I never tried?

What is this woman doing to you? Wake up!

“Checking on your rash.”

“The rash isn’t on my hand.”

I chuckled. Her sassiness turned me on. I wanted to kiss that mouth of hers and devour her sassy little words.

“You know, you kind of owe me one.”

“I do? How?” I made small circles on the back of her hand with my thumb.

“I’m kinda in this mess because of you, but you can pay me back. With a date.”

I couldn’t keep the smirk and amusing look off my face. This woman knew how to wipe away any trace of grumpiness and make me actually laugh for a change. “Actually, I found out earlier that the pharmacy gave you the wrong medication. You’llalso be tested for additional allergens to prevent something like this from happening again in the future.”

“They gave me the wrong medication?” Raelynn gasped, her face pale. “But…how? How does that happen? It looked exactly like the one I had been taking. It was even in the package lined up with the days of the week!”

“I know. That could be part of the reason they mixed it up. But it’s still no excuse. You could’ve died. I already called the pharmacy and gave them a piece of my mind.”

“You did?” Raelynn’s eyes softened, and the color returned to her cheeks.
