“The Family!” He would never understand. “My family isn’t like others, this isn’t a life I can escape.”
“We’re going to escape it together, Daisy.”
“How do you expect to do that?” Her eyes moved away from the road and to his. “Death is the only way out.”
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and started to text someone. His eyes looked up at hers before the road. “Daisy, look out!” His hand covered hers as her eyes moved to the road.
It was fate. A cruel and twisted way of showing her that even thinking about being happy, it would only lead to more heartache. She was too slow to slow down as the woman in red ran out in the middle of the road. Daisy had recognized her hair and that face as she flew across the car on impact.
She’d slammed on the brakes twenty feet ahead and was prepared to get out and meet her fate.
“Drive, Daisy.” Jay ordered.
“I can’t.” Her hand was covering her mouth as she looked at the scene behind them.
The bright street lights reflected in the pool growing around the woman’s lifeless body. It was worse than what she imagined. She felt his hand on her leg as the car moved forward. She didn’t know who was driving at that point before her eyes returned to the road and they drove onward.
“That wasn’t part of the plan, but it’s already in motion.” Jay had her pulled over next to another car just outside of where the road split between the East and West sides of the bay.
“Is it all in there?” Jay was stepping out of the car and speaking to a man.
Daisy's hands shook as she sat still.
“Yes, sir. Everything is ready to go. It’s been an honor knowing you.” The man spoke to Jay.
She felt Jay’s hands on her as she was guided out of his car and into another. It was as if time stood still but the air continued to move. She was numb to the coolness that moved her hair in the breeze and left goosebumps across her skin.
“Death is the next adventure, Daisy.” Jay’s voice sounded distant as they drove together in a different vehicle. “I learned early on to always have more than one plan in place and multiple steps that could be used for any of them.”
She remained quiet as they parked. He guided her across the pavement and into another vehicle. It wasn’t until her stomach sank and rose that she felt herself flying.
Was this death?
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
JAY
He ran his hand across her forehead and watched her chest rise and fall. Jay hadn’t been able to sleep since they arrived, he’d been too worried about her. It wasn’t every day an innocent person killed another, even by accident. Eventually the shock would wear out and he would do whatever he needed to help her move past this.
He moved across the small house to the windows he’d opened upon arrival a couple of hours earlier. A place he’d paid for in cash last week. Under the name of a new alias of course. A couple that came from a simple small town with no history. A new life living off the grid awaited them. Sure, they had technology and all the modern day appliances, but it was all run on solar.
A paradise that would be like a warm summer day all the time. A place where the dark and cruel world they came from couldn’t reach them. He knew Daisy’s family was the biggest threat to them, and the only way to escape would be to leave this world.
He wouldn’t let them be like Romeo and Juliet though. He would only let the rest of the world think so. Two people knew the truth, but nobody knew every step of the plan. It was the only way to be sure the world thought them dead.
An alert went off on his new phone and he opened it and clicked the link. The news outlets were already on top of things. Pictures of both of their faces with titles featuring the words car crash and instant death.
Rob and Nick were the only two who knew they were actually alive, but neither knew where they were. They only knew they were safe. Rob had been left in charge of Jay’s business. Nick would have to put on the act in front of her family. There was no telling what Tom would do, but he couldn’t reach them anymore. Nobody could.
For even the two that knew the truth, had to act as if death had happened.
The car was near unrecognizable after the crash and the DNA left at the scene would confirm to anyone who questioned that it was the two of them who left this world far too soon.
Jay knew his fate was with Daisy. Whether life or death, they’d find one another. Now, they could live in peace away from the cruel intentions of families and those in power.
All that mattered is that they were together… and they could finally live.
