Chapter 19
The One Month Wrap up
Epilogue
Boone
The saying, when it rains, it pours is no shit. Doesn’t matter, though; regardless of what we face, Syd and I make sure we have more on the home side of the Boone report than we do on the bad side.
Missing the playoffs sucked. Syd sucked harder during our private pregame in the locker room.
The Knights lost the game; and it was a whole lot deeper than a loss. Grimes is still not right in the head over it. But we survived, and that means more than any win. The entire organization agrees.
Syd built a fort for Lily to sleep in that night, and we brought Bossy back from the Hart home. Lily cried happy tears … while belly laughing when Bossy licked the hell out of her face.
Lindsey was released a couple of days after the game, and she and I are continuing counseling through Zoom while she’s still rehabbing and doing it at the lake house. Mitchell has now moved in with her, and they have both helped secure an order of protection for Lily. As much as Scott bugs the hell out of me, he’s in love with Mitch and, therefore, puts him first. A child, my Lily, was never the priority, and I will never be able to imagine anyone who doesn’t put children first.
Syd told me once, while I was grappling with it, that not one thing would change whether I did or did not forgive him, except that I would gain my own peace in the situation. However, she did point out that Lindsey had no control over the situation as she was hospitalized and that I had to forgive her for Lily. I agreed, but I still fight with that, too.
It’s more of an internal battle, wondering what I did that made her not trust that I would help her in any way possible, because I never want to make that mistake with my daughter or my wife. I want to be the person that, like the song says, they run to.
So, I have forgiven Scott and Lindsey, but I will not forget.
I also bought the lake house for her. When I handed her the keys, it was the first time we had seen each other since that day at the hospital.
Sydney and Lindsey talk a lot, text constantly, and are friends, good friends. Sydney, Lindsey, Lily, Gi Gi Molly, and whoever else is free go to get mani-pedis and lunch together once a month.
Lily has invited Sydney to join her and Lindsey on movie dates. The last time she went, a couple, specifically a woman and man, commented on how beautiful their daughter was and how brave they were for raising a daughter together in this political climate. Neither of them corrected them, but boy, did they laugh about it afterward. Now, it’s a nonstop joke about how well they co-parent together. So, for as angry as I am about everything else, the fact that Lily will likely not remember much from before she was five years old and those scars might not be as traumatizing to her, I am a lucky man because Lily has two women, and all the rest of the BV girl bossesses.
Dumb and Dumber, who owned the garage and tow truck, were arrested and are awaiting trial for tampering with evidence, fraud, and grand larceny. They are not in jail—until proven guilty and guilt will be proven.
Derek has been locked up and has way more charges than those two idiots. He's looking to spend twenty years in prison.
My point? Even with all the noise, all the chaos, all the horrible shit going on outside, in our little home, we always have a reason to celebrate a win, no matter how big or small.
So yeah, man, life is beautiful.
