“Sean!” Delaney screamed, just before Dick reared back and popped her in the face.
“Freeze!”
Only one of them did as Sean commanded. The big one. The subservient one. The one who had Delaney in his grubby squeeze when Sean rushed to the sound of her voice. Dude dropped Delaney—who wore nothing but a pair of blue jeans and a bra—to her knees and stuck his hands in the air.
Dick ran.
“Dammit,” Sean cursed, as he threw a pair of cuffs on Dude and watched Dick sprint into the woods. His gaze connected with Delaney. Not only was she half-naked, she had a red, swollen eye. “You alright, Delaney?”
She nodded rapidly. “Wyatt took off in the woods. They broke into my apartment and stole him.” She pointed in the same direction Dick had gone.
Sean took off after Dick like a jackrabbit.
Dick clearly already knew how things were going to go down. Sean didn’t care that this was the Worleys’ property. He didn’t care about the details of what happened here. All he knew was that Delaney was in their backyard, half-dressed, sporting the beginnings of a shiner. Rage fueled his speed.
Sean’s feet pounded hard, one after the other. He didn’t yellStop. Sean wasn’t in cop mode. He was something else entirely. Something that called on all his recent running training to kick in full throttle.
Dick was small and spry and knew the grounds, but Sean hauled after him in the pale moonlight. Dick’s shadow moved quickly, but Sean kicked it into fifth gear.
He wasn’t losing the race this time.
Just before Dick reached a break in the trees, Sean leaped. His chest slammed into Dick’s back and they both went down, face-first in the dirt. Dick coughed and moaned. Sean drew Dick’s arms behind his back and yanked him to his feet. “You’re under arrest,” Sean gasped, his lungs burning with exertion. “I’ll let you know for what as soon as I figure it out.”
