FORTY-ONE
“A research trip? During an emergency?” Despite Zina’s skepticism, excitement bubbled beneath the surface. Professional curiosity warred with practical concerns.
“Thora and Kalyna have agreed to watch the spa. Kalyna mentioned consulting Elder Willow about reinforcing the protective wards. Noven has eyes on Madrigal.” He paused, something vulnerable flickering across his features. “After yesterday’s revelations about the Founding Pyre, we both need clarity. And perhaps a few hours away from constant vigilance.”
The weight of recent days pressed on her shoulders—the attack in the alley, the spa vandalism, Severin’s threat, the mysterious Founding Pyre. A break sounded heavenly, but...
“I can’t just abandon my responsibilities.” She rubbed the back of her neck where tension had taken up permanent residence.
“You’d be fulfilling them,” Xai countered. “Gathering professional knowledge to protect your business while strategizing our next move from a position of safety.”
“Our next move?” She emphasized the word, not missing its implication.
“Partners face challenges more effectively than individuals.” His gaze held hers steadily. “We’re stronger together, Zina. You must have noticed.”
The honest assessment caught her off guard. Before she could formulate a response, the front door burst open with a gust of conversation.
“—told you she’d be here early. The woman never sleeps.” Bryn’s voice preceded her entrance, followed closely by Artemis balancing a large pink box.
Both women stopped short at the sight of Xai, exchanging a look so loaded with meaning that Zina rolled her eyes.
“Good morning, ladies,” Xai greeted them with practiced formality.
“Elder Emberwylde!” Bryn’s expression shifted from surprise to delight. “Fancy seeing you here at dawn. Again.” She elbowed Artemis, who was making little effort to hide her grin.
“Just discussing business,” Zina interjected quickly.
“At sunrise.” Bryn nodded sagely, setting down her bag. “Very professional. What kind of business requires such... dedication?”
Artemis placed her pink box on the counter, winking conspiratorially at Zina. “I brought emergency stress baking. Dragon-friendly cinnamon rolls—extra spicy—and lion-approved berry scones with honey.”
“We were discussing a potential research opportunity,” Zina explained, shooting her friends a warning glare they completely ignored.
“At Aroma Alcove,” Xai added, seemingly unperturbed by their audience. “Their techniques for supernatural aromatherapy could benefit Purrfect Oasis.”
Bryn’s jaw dropped. “Aroma Alcove? The ultra-exclusive retreat that rejects celebrities?” Her eyes widened comically. “The place rumored to bottle actual emotions?”
“Their reputation is somewhat exaggerated,” Xai demurred. “But their methods for tailoring scent therapy to different supernatural physiologies are unparalleled.”
“And you just happen to have connections there.” Bryn crossed her arms, looking impressed despite herself.
“Yes.”
Bryn dramatically grabbed Zina’s arm, pulling her aside while maintaining a stage whisper audible to everyone. “It’s not every day a dragon asks you on a road trip. Say yes or I’m stealing your appointment book and canceling everything myself.”
“I don’t need you canceling my appointments,” Zina protested, though her resolve was weakening.
“We can handle things here,” Artemis chimed in, already unpacking pastries. “Kalyna texted that she’s bringing Elder Willow to reinforce those protective wards. Plus, Thora will be here soon. Ain’t nothing getting past that chick.” She handed Xai a cinnamon roll with a theatrical flourish. “This one’s infused with ghost peppers. Thought you might appreciate the extra fire.”
The corner of his mouth twitched as he accepted it. “Thoughtful.”
“Oh, I’m full of thoughtfulness.” Artemis winked again, not remotely subtle. “I’ll even pack you snacks for the road. Dragon-friendly and lion-approved.”
Zina pressed her fingers to her temples, but couldn’t suppress a laugh at their transparent manipulation. These friends—this chosen family she’d built since her parents’ death—reminded her that life continued despite threats and danger. Their easy acceptance of Xai into this circle touched something deep inside her.
She studied him, standing relaxed amidst her friends’ teasing. The reserved council elder had shifted subtly since their first meeting—less rigid, more present. When he caught her watching, something unguarded flashed in his golden eyes.
“Fine,” she conceded, ignoring Bryn’s delighted squeal. “For research purposes. But I need thirty minutes to get ready.”
“Of course.” Xai nodded, the hint of a smile playing on his lips. “Nothing more than professional research.”
