The water hits me and I dive under a wave just as it breaks, feeling the rush of bubbles across my skin. When I surface, Lola is right beside me, her hair slicked back and eyes bright.
"God, this feels amazing," she says, floating onto her back.
Miles wades in more cautiously, but soon he's chest-deep, looking more relaxed than I've seen him in weeks. Harper squeals as a wave catches her by surprise, and Wes laughs, pulling her to him.
"Shoulder wars!" Reid calls out. "Harper, you're with me. Lola, pick your partner!"
"Jude!" Lola shouts immediately, swimming toward me. I crouch down in the water and she climbs onto my shoulders with practiced ease, her thighs gripping the sides of my neck.
"You and I can referee, Miles," Wes offers, already helping Harper onto Reid's shoulders.
"The rules are simple," Miles announces, raising his voice over the sound of crashing waves. "Last couple standing wins. No hair pulling, no face shots."
Harper wobbles precariously on Reid's shoulders, laughing as she tries to find her balance. "I'm going to fall before we even start!"
"Not on my watch," Reid says, gripping her legs firmly. "We've got this."
Lola leans down close to my ear. "Let's destroy them, babe."
I give her thighs a squeeze. "Consider it done."
Miles raises his arm. "Ready...set...go!"
Lola and I surge forward through the water as Harper and Reid do the same. The girls lock hands, each trying to push the other off balance. Lola's core strength is impressive—all those years of Pilates paying off as she holds steady above me.
"You're going down!" Harper taunts, giving Lola a playful shove.
"In your dreams!" Lola laughs back, countering with a push that nearly topples Harper. Reid adjusts quickly, steadying himself in the shifting sand beneath the water.
"Come on, babe, you've got this!" Miles calls from the sidelines.
But Harper grabs onto Lola again and pushes with all her might, sending Lola and me crashing into the water.
Lola pops out of the surf immediately. “Rematch! I was robbed!”
Everyone gets into position for the next round. Wes lifts Harper onto his shoulders while Miles does the same for Lola. Reid wades deeper, challenging Jude to join him where the waves are bigger.
Harper squeals as Wes charges forward, the water splashing around them. She locks hands with Lola, both women giggling as they push against each other. The guys beneath them struggle to maintain balance, their feet shifting in the sand as waves roll past their waists.
"Don't you dare drop me, Miles!" Lola shouts, her thighs clamping around his neck as a particularly strong wave threatens their stability.
"Not a chance," he promises, his hands firmly grasping her legs.
It doesn’t take long before Lola has her revenge, and Wes and Harper are defeated.
After spending the day body surfing, playing volleyball and tanning, we all hungrily dig into the lobster rolls in the evening. The sandwich spread for lunch was massive but that was hours ago and we’re all starving.
The guys all grab beers while Lola and Harper open up a bottle of wine to share.
As I dig into my food I can’t help but think how perfect this all is.
"We should have a bonfire tonight," Lola suggests, licking a bit of melted butter from her thumb. "We could do s'mores and watch the sunset."
"That's genius," Reid says, already on his feet. "I'll grab the firewood from the garage."
"We have all the s’mores fixings in the pantry," Miles adds, mentally cataloging our supplies.
Lola's eyes light up. "I’ll go up and grab them."
"I'll come with you," Wes offers, setting down his empty plate.
I watch them head up the beach steps together, grateful that the tension between them has fully dissolved. There was a time I wasn't sure they'd ever get back to normal.
Thirty minutes later, as the bonfire crackles to life and stars begin dotting the darkening sky, I wrap my arm around Lola's shoulders as she settles into the sand between Miles and Reid. The warmth from the fire mingles with the ocean breeze, creating the perfect temperature.
"You know what?" Lola says softly, her voice barely audible over the waves. "I never thought I'd have this."
"Have what?" Reid asks, passing her a perfectly golden s'more.
"All of you. This house. This life." She looks around at each of us, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "I spent so long thinking I had to choose, that loving all three of you was wrong somehow."
Miles reaches over and takes her free hand. "And now?"
"Now I can't imagine it any other way," she whispers.
"Neither can we," I say, my voice rough with emotion.
Reid nods, uncharacteristically serious. "This is it for us, Lo. Forever."
"Forever," Miles echoes, and the word hangs in the air like a promise.
Looking at the three people who complete me in every way, I realize this is what perfect feels like.
