Fennick’s job led him to a chance meeting with a group of shifters in Joshua Tree National Park, his assigned area for patrolling as a park ranger. Since the revelation that an ancient enemy was out to make all shifter and supernatural beings extinct, Fennick and his fellow Sentinels of Apollo have been working to ensure that all their kind are aware and taking precautions, such as banding together in areas where they can help defend one another.
The sad truth is there are not enough Sentinels to protect everyone, and with the Oracles no longer trusted or doing their job, Fennick and those like him have to work double time. When he calls in his fellow Sentinels to help him approach this rather large group and explain the danger they’re in, he never imagines that his bear, Ripper, would react to one woman in the group.
Ripper is adamant that Akiva is their mate. However, it seems one of the men with her is claiming her for himself. A reluctant Akiva goes with the band she’s traveling with to Needles with the Sentinels, but she slips away during the night. Fennick isn’t allowing her to run, even if she is an expert at covering her scent.
When Fennick catches up to Akiva, he finds out more than he was prepared for about her past, why she’s hiding within the group, and more. For Fennick, this only stirs him and his bear to want to protect and claim her even more.
But there’s more than one person who doesn’t want that. And they’re determined to keep Fennick and Akiva apart, even if it means taking lives. And that doesn’t include their mortal enemies, whom they know are lurking in the shadows but haven’t yet shown their faces.
Fennick is counting his blessings and his good fortune in capturing Akiva’s heart. And their enemies better beware. The world continues to change as more sentinels find their mates and battle the Knights of Pytho, while Apollo openly mixes with his creations and plays, well, God.
