“No one,” I whispered, unable to meet his eyes.
My heart was pounding in my chest.
“Tricia, who were you talking to?” he barked, and I cracked.
“What do you want me to say? I’m the freak who talks to animals. I can command them and sometimes I accidentallysend a bit of myself along with them. I guess that’s why Clementine smelled like me. It’s not like I did it just to drive you crazy. I was injured, stuck, and starving so I used what resources I had to get help. I will not apologize for that.”
I raised my chin in defiance and stared him right in the eyes.
His jaw locked as he glared back at me. The fire in his eyes set my body on fire. I didn’t know if I wanted to pound his chest in frustration or climb his perfect, hard body and beg him to take me right there. In the end, I did neither.
That wasn’t something I openly shared with anyone. It wasn’t safe. This man had infuriated me to the point that it had all just bubbled right out of me.
He was my mate, my one true mate, but as the hairs on the back of my neck rose, I heard Clementine’s voice in my head.
“You’re not alone, Tricia.”
Her words were laced with warning. I broke the stare down I had with Brady to look around the barn. There were others there and they were watching us.
How long had they been there?
Had they heard my secret?
My heart began to race as my fight or flight instincts engaged.
I turned and ran.
Brady
Chapter 20
I had so many questions, but I just stood there staring as she ran away.
“Don’t be a moron. Go after her,” Tim said.
“She’s a witch?” Kenneth asked. “Cool! I’ve never met a witch in real life.”
“Yes, you have,” he assured him.
“I have? Who?”
“Kelsey Westin for one, Lily’s sister-in-law. Remember?”
“She is?” he asked.
“Brady, go. You need to talk to her. She looked terrified,” Tim pointed out.
My feet felt like they were bolted to the ground as her words slowly sank in.
A witch?
My mate was a witch?
She really was the reason I thought I was going insane?
She’d done that to me? Made me a fool in front of my entire Pack? That was all her?
Tim walked over to me and pulled me into a hug.
