Maybe. She still had to take thetest.
Yeah, well, he didn’t need to confirm that fact. He didn’t want to even consider what this meant to either of them. All he wanted to do was hold this incredible woman in his arms and enjoy a little fantasy about the two of them together. With a kid. A house…abackyard…
I won’t screw this up. I will be the best damn dad on theplanet.
For a long moment, he honestly believed it too. With Jaya by his side, he would beat the depression. He would use the past to motivate him to not make the mistakes his parents had. He’d do whatever it took to make Jaya and their kidhappy.
Jaya’s hands, including the one holding the box, slipped around his waist and he hoped she was having the same fantasy. They could do this, he was sure ofit.
The plane bounced, Jaya releasing her tight hold and chuckling. “Colton is doing that on purpose, I swear.” As she broke the embrace, she used the back of her hands to wipe at her eyes. “Guess I better take this, huh?”
Was that a twinge of sadness in her voice? “Do you want me to stepoutside?”
She nodded. “But stay close, okay? Right by the door. Then we can, you know, see the resultstogether. ”
He gently took her empty hand and placed it on his chest. His heart was full and he wanted her to feel that. “It’s going to be okay. Ipromise.”
She smiled, just a small twitch of her lips, andnodded.
Bugging out, he shut the door behind him and pulled up short when he found Shelby standing there with a frown on herface.
“What’s going on? Is shesick?”
“She is,um…”
“Colton just announced we’re landing in five. You two need to get back to yourseats.”
Five minutes. Shit. How long did it take for a pregnancy test to give you the plus or negative sign? “She’ll be done in a minute and I’ll make sure she’s in her seat and buckled fordescent.”
“Are you sure she’s okay?” Shelby eyed the door like she was considering busting in. “Maybe I should check onher.”
“No.” Jon blocked the door handle and puffed up his chest. “I’ve got itcovered.”
Shelby’s frowned deepened. “You don’t look so good yourself. I bet you caught it, whatever itis.”
“I never get sick, and Jaya’s going to befine.”
She squinted at him. “Is there something you two aren’t tellingme?”
“Nope.”
She didn’t believe him. “Fine, but I’ll remind you I’m her best friend. You mess with her and I’ll kick your balls intoKansas.”
“Dulynoted.”
Fuming, she turned on her heel and marchedaway.
Once she was out of earshot, Jon knocked softly on the restroom door. “J? We’re landing in a fewminutes.”
After a long silence, the door creaked open and Jaya peered at him through thecrack.
“Well?” hesaid.
She started to say something when the plane bounced again and a crack of lightning ripped through the noise of the plane. Next thing he knew, she lurched forward, nearly losing her grip on the door, and vomited all over hisfeet.
