“Maiden is going back to prison. I get it. I don’t need to hear another word.”
But Grit’s expression was tight as he slowly shook his head. “Sorry, little Emmie, but it isn’t Maiden. It’s… your dad.”
I flung around and looked at the man who would be facing time.
Hammer, my dad…
No. Surely not. Dad would never put himself in a position that would result in me losing him. He was my support, he was… As I stared at him, disbelief spread across my face.
“Let you down, Emmie. Not gonna lie.” He moved toward me. “But we will get you through this. It’s one of the reasons Ryder is here. He is taking care of the club while I’m in.”
I put my hand up to stop him from making another move.
The club would survive, I knew that, but me surviving this was unlikely.
“Grit is stepping up—”
“I don’t want to hear a word about what is happening in the club! We all know that is zero of my business.” I unclenched my hands. “I told you I won’t ever interfere with club business”—I then slowly backed away from them—“and unlike some people, I keep my word.”
I didn’t have to say another word. As I walked back into the clubhouse, the anxiety brought the demons to life, which had been silent all today. Now, however, they were stirring, and the voices filled my mind.
Everyone leaves. Everyone lies. And no one loves you, Emmeline.
