I showed him instead of telling him, and his delighted laughter was the sweetest sound I’d ever heard.

Epilogue

Dain

Our perfect daughter was born nine months to the day of the masked ball in which I met my beautiful mate.

The day had started like any other, where I went to work, and Nym stayed at the manor and worked with Preston on plans for their bakery. Now that they had the funds they needed, they were in no hurry to open up their storefront. At least, not officially.

Since they had the bakery kitchen available, they began with a specialized marketing campaign to draw attention to their new business and encourage customers to check out their social media and make specialized orders, but the actual storefront wouldn’t open for another three months, which would give my mate some time to recover from childbirth and also give Preston a chance to do whatever it was he was doing. The last several months had been a whirlwind for him, and we never knew one day to the next whether he would be in the country.

Apparently, right now he was on his way home from his trip overseas. He had left two months ago since he was taking a baking course in Italy, but now that Nym had our baby, he was hopping on a flight to return home.

Once our child was born and Nym healed enough, we moved from the hospital suite back to our room. Eventually, the baby would go stay in the nursery we had decorated with elephants because they were gender neutral, but for right now, Nym was not letting our brand-new child out of his sight.

“How are you feeling, mate?” I asked.

“Fine.” He smiled up at me, his eyes bright. No one would ever guess that the man had just given birth, because here he was looking as radiant as ever, holding my child in his arms. Nym was bare-chested, and our daughter rested over his left pec, soothed by the beat of his heart. She wore the itty-bittiest diaper I’d ever seen and a yellow knitted hat given to us by one of Nym’s brothers.

“You’re beautiful,” I said.

“You’re biased.”

“She is beautiful. Look at her.”

Though we had decided not to figure out the gender, we had prepared just a tiny bit for either one, so little Calyn was wrapped in a pink blanket. She was nine pounds and perfectly healthy. “I told you she was going to be a big one,” Nym said.

“You weren’t wrong.”

Nym, though he hadn’t looked as big as he felt, had constantly said that our child was going to be massive. I couldn’t describe how it felt because I didn’t feel it, but I had watched numerous times as it seemed our child did rolls inside his belly, pushing against the confines of my mate’s womb, stretching his belly to its limits. It had been amazing to watch and to feel our child move under my palm.

“Do you need anything, love?” I asked.

“I’d like for you to come cuddle with me before we’re descended upon by the masses.”

“Your dad promised that he would wait until morning to visit. By then, Preston should be home.” It was 11 o’clock now. Our child had been born about two hours ago.

“You really think we’ll be able to hold them off that long?”

“No, and I know the nurse will be back within the next few minutes to check on you and little Calyn.” I really should sleep. According to just about every parent on the planet, we wouldn’t be getting much sleep in the next few weeks. I was too wired, though. The birth had been smooth, and my mate had been amazing, but I was keyed up.

“Would you hold her?” Nym asked, and he held her out to me.

I was careful to cradle her head, and I was not ashamed to admit that I had practiced this very thing. Jayson’s niece had visited the manor once; she had shown me how to carry a baby. Nym had told me it would come naturally, but I wasn’t leaving anything to chance.

When I cradled her in my arms and looked down at her perfect little face, I realized he was right. Instinct did kick in. I would protect this child with all that I had in me and more. I would love her and raise her. She and Nym were the center of my whole world.

“Can we have five more?” Nym said.

I laughed, even as tears came to my eyes. “Whatever you want, darling. After what you’ve given me, I owe you the world.”

“I don’t think you owe me anything. In fact, I think I owe you. You’ve given me the world.”

“Perhaps we’re both right,” I said.

I sat on the bed with my mate next to me and our child in my arms. Nym rested his head on my shoulder. “Wake me when she needs her next bottle. I’m just going to rest my eyes for a minute.”

“Of course, love. Anything you need. I’ve got you.”
