Jasper’s tail wagging turned enthusiastically genuine.
“Jasper! Come back to bed, we were only teasing!” called Malachi as he came around the corner of the house. He was tying a long green silk robe around himself and was obviously naked underneath it. His long red hair was loose and tousled. He froze when he saw the humans, his mouth forming a little O of shock.
Brendan ran around the corner, right behind Malachi and completely naked. He saw the humans, turned on his heels, and ran back around the side of the house. Dean had no idea if the humans saw him.
“There’s Jasper!” shouted Dean, far too loudly as he pointed at Thom, who was standing in the doorway of one of the smaller houses. No doubt summoned to stand watch by Silas in case they needed to magically attack.
Malachi nodded, flushed, and hurried up to Thom. They disappeared into the house.
Nervously, Dean turned to look at Emily. She was staring at him in horror. Far too late, Dean realized that Thom looked old enough to be Malachi’s grandfather. Dean winced. It had been the best he could do.
“I brought my dog with me when I moved here. Human Jasper was not happy, but my dog was too old to learn a new name,” said Dean faintly.
Emily stared at him. Seemingly utterly lost for words.
“Let me show you the playroom and then the family house,” said Dean, desperate to distract her. He breathed a huge sigh of relief when it seemed to work. She nodded dazedly and followed him.
“Hide Cyrus.”Dean sent down the mate bond. A mothman toddler would be impossible to explain. Dean wouldn’t even know where to start. Early Halloween costume maybe? Luckily Zayne was away on pack business. Thank heavens for small mercies. They certainly needed them. Nothing else could go wrong? Could it?
Thankfully and by some miracle, nothing else did go wrong. Dean waved Emily and the accompanying cops off until they were out of sight. Then he slumped as a wave of exhaustion washed over him. That had been hard work.
There was no rest though, as understandably, the whole pack came and gathered by Dean. Eager to discover what the humans had said. Silas came and stood by his side, and Dean was happy to have his support.
“The humans are happy with everything. She is going to recommend no further action apart from another visit in a year.”
The sighs of relief were audible. Amber picked up her pup and started sobbing quietly, her mate, Mark, wrapped his arms around her.
“We have learned some valuable lessons today,” said Dean as he looked over at Malachi, Jasper and Brendan, now all in human form and fully dressed. The trio squirmed uncomfortably.
“We have the warning sirens for an attack, but today has shown us we need more. So we are going to install a bell. Like a small church bell. If you hear it, it means humans are here and you need to act human,” explained Dean.
Everyone nodded their understanding. They all seemed happy with the plan. Simple but effective. A good way to prevent any future problems.
Silas spoke next. “Go on, I’m sure you all have shit to do.”
His words stirred everyone into action and, after a flurry of movement and a murmur of voices, the space outside the main house cleared.
Dean sagged in relief. “Thanks,” he muttered.
Silas strode up to him and twisted his hands into Dean’s shirt. “I need to go back to the Council chamber, are you going to be okay?”
Dean nodded. “Thank you for abandoning them for us.”
“Are you kidding? I’m hardly going to stay in a boring meeting when a shit load of humans drive through my magical wards.”
Dean grinned, but then rapidly sobered. “I’m sorry about the goth band stuff.”
Silas smiled and gave him a quick kiss. “Since you made me the lead singer, I’ll forgive you. If you had said drummer, it would be an entirely different story.”
Dean laughed in relief. Silas smiled at him again, but then turned away and quickly left. Dean had to hush his anxious wolf that wanted to snuggle. Tonight will come soon enough, he told his inner wolf. He hoped it was true.
Chapter three
Therestoftheday dragged but bedtime did eventually come. Dean dove into bed excitedly, eager to spend time alone with his mate. It was his favorite time of day and he would never tire of it. He remembered too well when he had first fallen in love with the necromancer and the thought of going to sleep with him every night and waking up with him every morning, had felt like a far-off, unobtainable dream.
Then had come that awful time separated from Silas, believing he would never have the omega in his arms again, let alone get to sleep with him every night. Now it was his life and he was never going to take it for granted.
Silas came to bed in his beautiful black silk pajamas with his hair all curling and damp from his shower. As soon as he got under the covers, Dean pulled him close. Slipping his hands under the silk top to caress Silas’s skin.
