J ason gripped the wheel, keeping them on the asphalt as the sedan’s bumper scraped against their side panel.

“That’s enough of that,” Olive muttered.

As Jason pulled ahead, she rolled down the passenger window. Steadying herself against the door frame, she leaned out. The wind whipped her hair across her face as she raised the gun and pointed it behind her at the sedan.

“Olive, what are you doing?” Jason’s voice carried over the road noise.

“Ending this conversation.”

She aimed carefully at the sedan’s front tire and squeezed the trigger.

The shot went wide, sparking off the asphalt.

The sedan swerved away from them, giving her a clearer angle.

Her second shot found its mark.

The sedan’s front tire exploded in a shower of rubber, and the car immediately fishtailed.

“Got them.” Olive pulled herself back into the Tahoe.

The sedan fought for control, sliding sideways across both lanes before the driver managed to bring it to a stop on the shoulder of the road.

Jason slowed their speed, watching in the mirror with a slight grin as steam began to rise from the sedan’s engine compartment. “Impressive.”

“Thanks.” Olive turned toward him. “Should we go back and see who they are?”

As if to answer her question, the men climbed from their vehicle, guns raised as they fired off shots at Jason and Olive.

Their safest bet was to keep on going.

But that had been close.

As she and Jason continued down the road, Olive couldn’t shake the feeling that their pursuers had accomplished exactly what they’d intended.

They’d sent a message: We know where you are. We can reach you whenever we want.

“Where to now?” Jason asked.

Olive looked back at the empty highway behind them, then ahead at the road that led deeper into Texas. “I’m not sure. You have any ideas?”

He released a pent-up breath. “I’ve been putting this off, but I need to tell my sister about Dad before she hears another way.”

Olive nodded. “Makes sense.”

But as she stared out the window, she couldn’t help but feel like what had already happened were just the opening moves.

More was to come.

She had no idea what these people’s next play might be, but they needed to be ready for anything.
