While I don’t think it’s necessary to read this glossary to understand the Wrasa terms I use in this novel, I decided to create one anyway to help you navigate the world of my shape-shifters.

Alai – “Wanderer.” Basically a “lone wolf.” Slightly disparaging term for a Kasari or Syak who lives alone and is not part of a pride or pack.

Ammakki – “Mom.”

Antapi – “Both.” Hybrid shifter whose parents belong to different shifter subspecies.

Appo – “Dad.”

Arin – “Heart.” Pet name, the Wrasa equivalent of “sweetheart.”

Ashawe – “Sharp.” Coyote-shifters.

Kalyani – “It’s okay.”

Kasari – “Saffron-colored.” Lion-shifters.

Kanme – “Plaything.” Fling; unlike a mate, the relationship isn’t serious.

Maharsi – “Great seer.” Dream seer; someone who gets glimpses of the future, present, or past in their dreams.

Maki – “Large.” Bears-shifters.

Manark – “Noble one.” Title of a councilor of the High Council.

Mutaline – The hormone that controls shifting.

Natak – “Lord” or “master.” Title of a pack or pride regent, might also be known as an alpha.

Nederi – “Under.” A subordinate, often used to refer to a lower-ranking member of a pack or pride. Sometimes also referred as an “omega.”

Nemi – “Jewel,” “treasure,” or “precious one.” An endearment comparable to “darling.” Only used with one’s mate.

Parwese – “First.” Title of the high king of the Allied Prides, regent of the Kasari.

Puwar – “Fire.” Tiger-shifters.

Rtar – “Red.” Fox-shifters.

Saru – “Hunter.” A shape-shifter law enforcement unit that guards their secret existence. Saru is also the rank of simple Saru soldiers.

Se-asrai – “One body.” Humans.

Serska – “Sister-in-law.”

Skiyo – “Shade” or “shadow.” A root vegetable dish that looks like lasagna but tastes like earth to humans.

Sleme – “Flame.” Wrasa funeral rite (cremation).

Svayampar – “Marriage.”

Syak – “Together.” Wolf-shifters.

Tas – “Commander.” Rank of a Saru officer.

Twere – “Door” or “transition from one phase to another.” A three-day celebration akin to an engagement party.

Wertsiya – The Wrasa’s High Council.

Wrasa – “Living being” or “creature.” The species of shape-shifters.

Yasi makamar – “Night run.” A ritual that is part of the twere. The families of the people getting engaged run together in their animal forms at night.
