B essie Dove-Lyon took hold of the card left with the flowers in her office.

Breaking the wax seal, she read the words left by the Earl of Blackthorn.

She gave a nod of approval for his words of gratitude.

The earl had been one of her toughest challenges to date.

She had had a few doubts that another successful match would be made with such a stubborn lout.

Even she could see the attraction between Blackthorn and Cassandra.

At least, he had come around in the end.

She didn’t like to think of the alternative. Refunds were never an option.

She went over to a sideboard and poured herself a draught of sherry.

Taking a sip, she gave a silent salute not only to herself but to Cassandra Vaughn.

That woman knew what she wanted in life and she certainly got what she asked for.

The notice in the paper that she was now an engaged woman left Bessie giddy with delight.

There was nothing like another happily satisfied customer.

It was good for business and Cassandra Vaughn had certainly paid a substantial amount for her friends and herself to find men worthy of them.

A knock upon the door had her lowering her veil as she called for the person to enter. Hermia stood holding the knob and Bessie could see someone standing behind her.

“Sorry to interrupt you, Mrs. Dove-Lyon, but the lady was most insistent that she speak with you,” Hermia said with a worried frown. “I tried to tell her she needed to make an appointment but she wouldn’t listen.”

“Then by all means, let her in and you can return to watching the lady’s entrance,” Bessie replied, taking a seat behind the mahogany desk.

Hermia stepped aside to allow the woman to stroll into the room. She took a seat and fidgeted with her reticule. “Thank you for agreeing for me to see you without any notice, Mrs. Dove-Lyon.”

“What can I do for you, Mrs. Yates?” Bessie asked while a smile crept over her mouth, not that Emily could see it.

Emily took something from her reticule and slid the draft across the desk. “I was hoping I could hire you to find a husband for me. Cassandra Vaughn mentioned you had been very instrumental to her cause and you might do the same for me.”

Bessie took a look at the amount before placing the deposit in the desk drawer. It was more than enough to cover her fees. “Tell me who you had in mind for a husband, Mrs. Yates.”

And as Bessie listened to another client hoping to find true love, she could only think of the others this woman might know who could potentially bring in more money for her matchmaking business. And so it began again…
