Dom’s breathing changed to slow and deep breaths like a man deciding whether he would burn Miami down to nothing or just the people responsible. His voice dropped to a whisper that sounded like a threat to God himself.

“No. No… no, no, no.”

I heard the sirens and the shouts and the footsteps rushing closer and I finally exhaled. It almost seemed like Dom’s gun went off at the same time as the perpetrator’s gun like a domino effect. Dom did exactly what he was supposed to do. The shots around us got even louder and I knew that was our people, right here at the courthouse holding court in the streets behind this shit.

“Dom…” I said, barely above a whisper.

His hand cupped my cheek with his forehead dropping to mine and his eyes closed like he was praying. “I got you. I swear to God, I got you.”

The blood kept spreading and the world kept spinning, and then… everything else stopped.
