When he snapped the phone closed I gave him what I hoped was my fiercest look. “Kane. You can’t go anywhere. The stitches could open up and you could start bleeding again.”
“They have DiEmanuele.”
“That’s great. Right?”
“Extremely.”
“You still can’t go anywhere.”
“What if I wait until morning?”
I twisted my lips, knowing that if he was really intent on leaving there wasn’t much I could do to stop him. “All right. As long as you’re careful. But I want to go with you.”
“No way,” he said immediately.
“Kane, I almost died from anxiety waiting here for you. I just lost my mom. I can’t handle worrying about you too.”
I bit my lower lip to keep it from trembling.
“We’ll talk about it tomorrow,” he said, the look on his face already saying that he wasn’t going to budge.
Which was fine, because I wasn’t going to budge either. I’d almost lost Kane, and no matter what I had to do, I was going to make sure we didn’t go through that situation again.
