“She’s going to be fine, right?” I asked. Roland raised an eyebrow. “Kendall. Managing all by herself.”

He smiled that stupid grin that I had come to love so much. It reassured me, made me feel like everything would truly be okay. Because it was.

“You said so yourself,” he said, “She’s got it under control.” He winked. “Besides, you haven’t taken a day off in over a month.”

“Technically, this is still work.”

“I know,” he leaned over and kissed my cheek. “Seriously. If you think I should gut it and revamp it, then I’m in. But I want your opinion first.”

“And you’re serious about the wedding?”

“Hell yes,” he said. “It’s got romance written all over the bones. Literally, like tattoos. You’ll see.”

He held my hand, rubbing my engagement ring, and I imagined the bones in the shadowy darkness, and the creepy music we could play. All of my sisters, Haley, Scarlett, Melissa, and Teagen in blood-red dresses, with black rose bouquets. Me in a black dress with mauve lace. Roland in his black tux, his pushed back hair, and those dark eyes that were mine, all mine.

The world may not have been perfect, but my world was, and with each other, the world was at our feet.
