JD
I was drunk. Buzzing like a downed power line. My hand trembled as I hit her name in my contacts.
Evie.
The phone rang twice before she picked up. “JD?”
“Don’t hang up,” I said quickly, leaning against the bar counter in the dim light of the clubhouse. “Please.”
There was a pause. “I’ll give you ten seconds after what happened today.”
“I just needed to say it,” I muttered, rubbing a hand over my jaw. “You’re amazing, Evie. Sexy as hell. Smart. Got a voice that could melt steel... but my heart... my heart was already stamped with someone else’s name on it before I ever met you.”
Silence.
“I’m sorry,” I added.
“I figured,” she said quietly. “You were always looking somewhere else when I was with you.”
I closed my eyes. “If we’d met first... if things were different... maybe we’d have had a real shot. ”
“Maybe,” she whispered. “But I have my own ghost too, JD. One I never quite buried.”
My chest clenched.
“I told Regan I wanted Skye to pay. That maybe I’d fake it, make her think I’d moved on... make her jealous,” I confessed. “I wanted revenge. Still might.”
Evie let out a soft laugh. “Sounds like something Regan would say.”
“She said to let you come around the clubhouse... meet some of the brothers. Maybe fall for one of them instead.”
A pause.
“Maybe I will,” she said, her voice teasing but soft. “Maybe I’ll come play.”
“I wouldn’t blame you,” I muttered. “Hell, I’d root for you.”
“Thanks, JD.”
“Take care of that heart, Evie.”
“You too,” she said. “Don’t drown in your ghosts.”
The line went dead. We had only hung out a handful of times. I hadn’t slept with her, although I was about to until Skye came back out of thin air.
How does an ex do that? Six years on I had finally met someone that sparked a fire and bam… there was the original one.
I shook my head. I was a mess. I needed to get my head straight and sit down with Skye like two adults. I texted Regan.
You have permission to free the prisoner. But she can’t leave the compound.
*Me rubbing my hands together. Can’t wait to get my claws on the girl who ghosted you.*
Maybe that’s my revenge… YOU! LMAO
Edge was nursing an iced-coffee as I stumbled in.
“I texted Regan to deal with her. I-I just can’t until I get my head straight.
I always day dreamed off a chance meeting…
what I would say? What I what I do? And still nothing prepared me for it.
She did quite the fucking number on em, Edge.
I could have had anything and anyone I wanted—but my stupid heart wanted her. ” I shook my head and walked out.
