Story: Debt of My Soul
Chapter 19
Liam
S tepping out on my front porch, the compound is a madhouse. The sun has finally set, and I can see the firepit roar to life for the evening. Several men dart to their bikes, and I’m missing something.
“Hey, Trip. Where’s the fire, man?” I yell as he runs to his green Kawasaki.
He turns, running backward as he yells back, “Not there yet, but there will be at your brother’s girl’s house.” He snickers at that and turns.
I blink, fear slowly pouring into my veins.
What the …
In two steps, I’m off the porch, running to the clubhouse. I meet Blitz coming out with a backpack.
“What the hell is going on?” I demand.
“Liam.” Darrin’s voice booms from behind me, and I turn to find him with his leather jacket on and the keys to his car twirling in his hand.
“Darrin. What’s going on?”
“We’re making a move on your brother. He’s been at each establishment for the past several weeks, racking up more and more debt. Don’t think I didn’t notice the new truck.” He strides forward, lowering his voice. “There’s only so much you can do, Liam. Or would you like me to pay a visit to your grandparents?”
I stiffen, fighting the urge to cast my fist in his face. Like hell he’ll go to my grandparents. I could kill Adam. All he had to do was put his head down and work hard, but he can’t even do that.
Shit .
“What’s your plan? I won’t allow you to hurt him.”
Darrin’s eyes meet mine. Blue and brown hold my stare, and he doesn’t even blink. Disgust rolls off his nose and he narrows his stance, spitting on the ground next to me. It doesn’t faze me. I step up to him, and he meets my chest with his.
“I’m sending a message. Adam will pay for his stupidity. Don’t get in my way, Liam.”
“Let me come with you.”
“No. You’re too close to this. Stay here. Don’t step out of line.”
He turns to walk away. My hand twitches at my side with the desire to run to my bike. I yank my phone from my pocket and text Adam.
Where are you?
I pace the sidewalk to the clubhouse. Torn between my duty and my brother.
Damn it.
I run to my bike.
