“Well, that’s that,” my mate said as we settled into our small home in Sacramento.

The battle for the Human Realm had been epic, and the correct side had won. Thankfully, Lucifer had stepped up and done the right thing for all involved.

What I really wanted to discuss was why Scotty destroyed Bobby Miller, that little pissant. Bobby had been the one to steal my body after Erebus killed me, and he’d been in cahoots with Nyx for a long time. She was back in Droh behind a locked door, never to be seen or heard from again, and Erebus had been destroyed by Lucifer so she’d be without company. Eternity was a long time to talk to yourself.

“I’m going to take a shower.” Scotty headed toward the bathroom, but I followed him. I was nothing if not annoying.

“Let me help you get undressed. How’s your stomach?”

He raised an eyebrow at me before he smirked. “Good. How about yours? Have you ever seen Dash so commanding? I’ll go check on him and baby Grace after my shower.”

Nice try to change the subject, but he forgot who he was dealing with. “Yeah, uh, I need to go see Pops to see what our next gig is.”

Scotty nodded before he began unbuttoning my pants and pushing them down, coming face to face with my better half. The snake was coiled and ready to strike. I was the epitome of lust after all.

My mate dropped to his angelic knees and gave my viper the breath of life—another name for a blow job. He had a mouth on him that most would kill for.

When I blew my load, I pulled Scotty up from his knees and kissed him. “Thank you, my sweet. So, I have a question. Why did you destroy Bobby Miller?”

Scotty turned on the water, which was always the perfect temperature thanks to the tankless hot water system I’d had installed. We stepped into the shower and washed each other. I was ready to fuck him against the wall, but then I stopped. Knowing Scotty, that was exactly what he wanted me to do because it would change the subject.

“Still waiting for an answer.” Annoying, remember?

He sighed. “I remembered how betrayed I felt back when I killed him. Seeing him side with Nyx, all those feelings returned, and I did it without thinking. I’ll probably get into trouble for it, but it was an undeniable impulse, so I went with it.”

I kissed his lips. “If you get another undeniable impulse concerning me, please go with it. I love you, and I want all your impulses. Let’s never speak of that asshole again.”

Scotty grinned. “You got a deal, prince.”

Hours later, I went to Lucifer’s place in Hades. We’d finished our last assignment, and I was anxious to know what he and the Celestial Council had in store for us.

I knocked on the door, and when Lucifer’s newish valet, Gabriel—the former arch who got kicked to the curb for colluding to make Uriel, the head of the Celestial Council, look bad—opened the door, his frown made me crack up.

“Gabe, buddy. How they hangin’? Pops around?” I loved to torment the uppity bastard.

“I’ll see if Master is interested in—”

“My son! So good to see you. Come join me.” There was Lu, standing outside his office, shall we say?

I winked at Gabriel. “Check ya later.” Stepping around him, I pimp-walked my way down the large hallway and hugged Lucifer, my new father. As I thought about it, he and my biological father weren’t very different at all, except my lawyer-father tormented those above ground, and Lu took care of it below, so to speak.

I walked into the throne room, which was filled with former followers of Nyx waiting for their turn to beg to be returned to Limbo. I hadn’t seen any of them on my way in, so I guessed that wasn’t going too well for them.

“I wanted to ask what’s in store for Scotty and me since we completed our last assignment.”

Lucifer took his place on his wicked-looking throne and stared at his long talons for a moment. “I’ve not received any suggestions from those on high. What do you think you and Scotty would like to do? Tired of chasing malcontents who believe they can escape their destiny?”

I sat on the stairs to his right, staring at the souls misled by Nyx. I was sure the anticipation of their turn at bat was as nerve-racking as anything they’d suffered thus far in the fringes of Hell.

“How about this mess? Need me to take over?” I was nothing if not helpful.

“Eh? No, no. This is fun. You would think I’d tire of listening to them snivel, beg, and cry, but I find it immensely calming. Where’s your mate? You should be enjoying your downtime.”

“He went to check on Dash and the baby. Dash will be fine, right? He’s going to live and have a full life, right?” I didn’t know if Lucifer would keep his word, and the fact Dash was so impressive during the fight might cause Lu to change his mind.

“He’ll be fine. Why? Did you hear the Council was planning something? The Gatekeeper was impressive in his stand against Nyx. The Council should reward him for his courage and loyalty. Are they breaking their word?” Lu seemed ready to act, but I’d heard nothing of the sort.

If they were, I knew Scotty and I would fight them on it. We were there to see that those who were dumb enough to try to bargain with the Devil kept their end of the bargain whether Lucifer did or not.

We would fight the Celestial Council if they tried to renege. It was what we did for those we loved, Keir, Dashiell, Grace, and someday a little boy. Our human family.
