“No more running,” she agreed. “Besides, someone has to make sure you two don't mess this up again.”
Catherine wiped tears from her cheeks. “We were thinking of having Sunday dinners when you visit.”
“I'd like that.” Savanah looked between them.
Richard took Catherine's hand. “Some mistakes don't deserve second chances. We got lucky.”
Outside, Mason waited by the car. Jacob lounged in the backseat, grinning through the window as Savanah moved toward the vehicle.
“Ready to chase some ghosts?” he called out.
Savanah laughed, really laughed, for the first time in days. “Is that what we're calling it?”
“Better than calling it Mason's Paranormal Circus.”
“Hey!” Mason protested, but he was smiling too. “Show some respect for your superior officer.”
“Superior pain in my—”
“Children,” Savanah interrupted, “play nice.”
She looked back at her childhood home, at her parents standing together on the porch. At the way Richard's arm wrapped around Catherine's waist.
Some endings were indeed really beginnings in disguise.
“Let's go home,” she said, climbing into the passenger seat.
Mason started the engine. “Which home would that be?”
She caught his hand across the console. “Wherever you are.”
Behind them, Jacob made gagging noises. “You two are worse than Cree and West.”
Mason's phone buzzed. Jacob read the text aloud: “If you don't get here soon, I'm sending all the ghosts to haunt you. PS: Tell Savanah she better not disappear before I meet her.”
“Bossy psychic,” Mason muttered.
“You love her,” Jacob said.
“Yeah.” Mason smiled at Savanah. “I've got a thing for bossy psychics.”
Savanah’s life would never be the same.
