Page 36 of Corbin (Wild Wolf Pack from the world of Gallize Shifters #2)
Vlad watched a spider web outside the window of the cheap motel that he would leave soon. He enjoyed fine foods and better lodging, but he wanted no one in the United States to learn he’d been on this soil.
Fairly easy to remain under the radar in a country of idiots.
Jackal shifters topped that list. The one talking too much on this phone call tried to justify failure.
Mitch’s voice shook as he rushed through what had transpired while Vlad traveled from Chicago to Charlotte, North Carolina, last night.
“SCIS had a tip this morning that a rogue wolf shifter was hiding in Spartanburg with that singer Eirene Givenchy. Once they had the pair chained inside an SCIS prison van, I would have sedated the driver at the last minute and replaced him. It would have been so simple to deliver the wolf to you and sell the female.”
Mistake number two for Mitch. “You would have offered the woman to someone else?”
“I, uh, thought you only wanted the male.”
That was the problem when simpletons like Mitch tried to think for themselves. “I have a very successful network for unloading shifters.”
“Sorry, I didn’t know.”
He was not supposed to know. Vlad pinched the bridge of his nose. “Finish what you have to say in the next sixty seconds.”
Talking even faster, Mitch explained how SCIS lost the two shifters who escaped on a motorcycle going west out of Spartanburg.
“Roadblocks have been set on every primary road with warnings about the two of them being dangerous. The reports have not mentioned Givenchy by name. Authorities may be trying to return her to Leszek Moore.”
“Who?”
“Her trustee. Powerful physician in the shrink business, among other things. Not a man any shifter wants to cross. He has a direct line to SCIS.”
Vlad had heard enough from this dog. “Do you know where the male wolf shifter is right now?”
“Not exactly, but I’m east of Lavonia, Georgia. They were spotted going north after leaving that area fifteen minutes ago. I’m very close and bringing no one with me. There might be someone inside SCIS leaking information. I’ll call you as soon as I’ve got your wolf in hand.”
Could this jackal find Corbin as he claimed?
Vlad had his doubts, but the jackal might be closer than anyone else if his information was correct. “Call me immediately.”
Mitch’s relief washed across the phone line. “Yes, sir. I will. I won’t let you down. I’m glad you’re allowing me—”
Vlad disconnected the call to end the dribble. He had something else he needed.
Placing a call to the top man in his shifter trafficking business should result in better news.
Iso answered with his usual, “I am at your service.”
Vlad had liked Iso from the minute he stole the boy at seven years old. “Have you found a shifter capable of performing the service I need?”
“Absolutely. This one has been well-fed until now. I currently have him chained in animal form with live food tied up six feet away. He will give you a show you won’t forget.”
“Very good, Iso. Take him close to where you have the helicopter and wait for my call to load and fly him immediately.”
“It will be done.”
A successful enterprise depended on compiling the best humans in the business.
