Cass nodded right along with me as we started up toward Ridge’s front door. “Yes, the problem is that I can’t remember where I put it.”
I was a hundred and two percent positive it was in his crib, but I hid it quickly. “We might have to search for it,” I said, pretending to be sad about the time it would take to find it. “We might miss some of the party.”
I went to knock on Ridge’s door but Tabitha threw it open before I made contact. Ridge’s wife beamed at us as she welcomed us into her home until her face fell at our sorrowful expressions.
“What’s wrong with you two?” she asked, letting us into the living room.
“Cassandra misplaced Sean’s blanket and I’m worried if he wakes up and doesn’t have it, he’ll be upset.”
Cassandra flashed me a look, silently letting me know she was not happy I blamed her, but I’d apologize with my mouth a few minutes later if this worked.
Tabitha smiled, a little more knowingly than I liked. “Let me guess. You guys need to run home and look for it?”
“For the baby.” Sean may be a toddler, but he’d always be my baby. At least until he had a sibling, which hopefully happened soon.
Aunt Mary stepped up to the doorway and took Sean from me. “We can’t have the precious child upset now, can we? You two run home right now and find his blanket. I can’t believe you, Riley. Without Cassandra to take care of you, where would you be?” she asked, smiling at my wife like they were best friends.
“You heard the woman,” I said to Cassandra. “Let’s go find his blanket. I hope you can remember where you put it. You must take better care of his important items.”
Cass tapped my shoulder on the way out, but we were both laughing by the time we made it to the car.
“You are so getting dumped in the spring, Riley Jefferson,” she said, buckling her seatbelt as I peeled out of Ridge’s driveway. I had blankets to find and wives to lavish.
