Chapter 31
Mateo
T he maddening pitch of a phone woke Mateo from the best sleep he had ever had in his life.
He glanced down at the beautiful woman that was draped half-way across his body.
“Help me,” he directed the words to Kazi. ”Only you two and Emilio have this number.”
The latter didn’t say anything; he simply assisted with shifting Yara off Mateo.
Finally reaching the phone, he answered the call. “Boss.”
“That’s fucking rich since you sent me off like your errand boy.”
“Information?” Mateo shifted on the bed, casting a glance back at Yara, she was still soundly asleep. His hand reached up on its own accord, brushing a piece of hair that had fallen across her face.
“I looked into the man, James , and into all of his business associates. She said his silent partner sent him to the company? Well here is where it gets weird, for all accounts and purposes, the silent partner is a complete ghost. I couldn’t find anything on him. Except—” he paused.
“I told you not to tell him about James!” Kazi mouthed the words in anger at Mateo, but he brushed them off.
“Except what?” Mateo rumbled out.
“A home address. It is the only one listed on all the documentation I went through. Mateo, I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but you can’t let anything happen to Yara, I’m too close to reuniting with Izzy. This would ruin it. I’m sending you the address now.”
The phone disconnected.
A moment later, the address came through.
Mateo swore quietly into the room. He turned the phone’s screen to Kazi. “Recognize this address?”
Mateo watched as the shock flashed across Kazi’s face, his eyebrows knitting together, his skin draining of all its color.
“That’s in the same building as our apartment. It’s the floor above us,” Kazi whispered the obvious into the space, tightening his hold on Yara who still slept soundly in his embrace. “What’s going on? How does any of this make sense? If it’s the stalker, why wouldn’t they send the threatening letters there, if they knew where she lived?”
“Only one way to find out.” Mateo stood carefully, stretching his body as he went and cracking his neck.
He bent down, ignoring Kazi, and placed a kiss on Yara’s forehead before getting dressed.
He cast one wistful glance back at his little bee before leaving the room.
He needed to track down their only lead before it went cold, but he would be back. She wouldn’t have to wait for him for long.
